1114356 2010-06-30 10:29:00 Well, that generated a discussion, but no-one knows a worthy technician in North Canterbury apparently!

For the person who was unsure of the drive in this thing, it is a Hitachi DK23EA-40, which is a 2 . 5" drive with a Z-Height of 9 . 5mm . I am not sure if that is an unusual sucker or not .

However, I also checked my receipts for when I bought the laptop, and it was 2003, two years older than I remembered . It has caused no problems in that time, so I guess Fujitsu makes good laptops and Hitachi makes good drives .

The only thing I have done thus far is to stuff more RAM into it . I managed that OK on my own without breaking anything, but a drive it a bit more than I feel like managing . However, I do have Drive Image, so I could image the drive, and it is on a LAN, so maybe it wouldn't be too hard .

Hueybot - thanks for the offer, but I have a great technician in ChCh who I have used to build various PCs for me, my wife, and my daughter over the years, so if I have to go to the car infested swamp, I might as well go back to him . I was trying to avoid any unnecessary trips into the smog now I have left it behind . But thanks again .

1114359 2010-06-30 11:59:00 I have a 20GB Hitachi on my 2000 laptop still here, it's an IDE, we use a DSE 2.5" USB2 enclosure case :D

I also have a Fujitsu 40GB off a mate.

Connect to a working PC and image it and then throw the image back onto the new one.

Hi
Thanks for the recommendation - supergran pmed me the same person's contact details, and he gave me a good quote for the job. He came and picked up the laptop last night. A bonus is that his grandparents live in our street, so he gets to visit them at the same time as us, and I didn't need to go up to Amberley to drop the lappie off! Thanks again.

1114362 2010-07-10 10:36:00 Stephen of Bright Star PC did a pick up and delivery of my laptop from/to my home, and did the replacement of the hard drive in an efficient manner and short time frame. He also sorted out a boot problem that was left over from the days when it was dual booting Linux and Windoze.

If you live in North Canterbury I would recommend his firm.
