824024 2009-12-01 20:29:00 No I mean paid vs free Presto Oh Right -- Its not free - the download / Trial is free - much like a lot of other software, then its $19.95 USA. You know- Download for Free (insert Program name) then you find out its going to cost X $.

What I tried was changing the home page to Gmail - Hit the start button selected Xandros Presto, booted, 10 seconds - clicked on the FF Icon - typed in user name and password - Gmail sitting there.

May not be quite as quick as Chrome OS to log in, but I think the extra approx 5 seconds, and approx $35.00, along with being able to install on existing hardware, and having access to your data locally, out weighs the cost of purchasing a New Netbook.

The manufactures of Netbooks will be loving that option

PS:Just looked, theres hundreds of free apps as well you can install.

824026 2009-12-01 22:49:00 How long does the free / trial edition last for ?

Yeh I was looking at the Presto App Store (Looks like a subset of its Click n Run / CNR store) and it's got a fair few apps in there :)

As long as I can install Chrome-4.0-Dev I should be a happy camper ;)

824028 2009-12-02 01:01:00 Yeah just installed, looks like 7 days. I'm too cheap to fork out the $$ ... Though $28 isn't bad... Having 3 machines which have just got Win7 upgrades, I wonder how I'll convince SWMBO I need this :p Chilling_Silence (9)
824029 2009-12-02 02:03:00 Yeah just installed, looks like 7 days. I'm too cheap to fork out the $$ ... Though $28 isn't bad... Having 3 machines which have just got Win7 upgrades, I wonder how I'll convince SWMBO I need this ;) Well it usually starts off with - Darling :wub I have discovered a real low cost program that I can sell to my customers, that will get a good return - its a MUST have -- Oh by the way - have I told you how beautiful you are looking lately :wub

Around here - thats usually followed by -- P1ss off - I dont care  - remember that ( add her latest must have "thing" she wanted) :p

Then you go and buy it any way.

824030 2009-12-02 02:52:00 I've found it works best if I suck up first, then ask for something ;) Chilling_Silence (9)
824031 2009-12-02 03:30:00 I've found it works best if I suck up first, then ask for something ;) Best time is when they are watching their favorite TV show ( in SWMBO's case, shortland street) Talking's a No No  -- she agrees just to shut me up - either that or after the "products" brought - you say I did ask - you agreed- you were watching ( insert TV show) dont you remember ????

Back on topic - It will be interesting to see what Chrome OS ends up like, as we know its currently still Beta - anything can change.

824032 2009-12-02 05:01:00 Hahahah, yes SWMBO is the same, Shortland Street or Home & Away ...

The ability to login offline would be nice, but I'm sure that's on the cards as the OS apparently can make use of Google Gears etc for when there's no WiFi.

Having to pay $30 so I can use Pidgin instead of a browser-based chat app seems a bit OTT for me. I was hopeful, but doubt I'll re-boot into Presto again :(
