1114101 2010-06-28 21:13:00 Add a 5770 to the budget build in this month's PC World and you'd having a "capable" gaming machine for ~$1,000 - as long as you're not fussy about the case and PSU :) pablo d (15490)
1114102 2010-06-28 22:54:00 Although the PSU IS something you should be fussy about, even if you have to spend an extra couple hundy to get a decent one. Just ask people like chilling silence, wanganuitech and pctek about what happens if you use budget psu's. 8ftmetalhaed (14526)
1114103 2010-06-28 23:09:00 yeah i just had another old one die on me (not in my main rig, i use corsair for that) so of all people I should really be more fussy about them :p but meh, even the cheapies will last at least a couple of years if you're nice to them and it's a pretty easy part to upgrade if/when you can afford it.

And if $1,000 is a concrete amount, it's either that or the GPU goes...

1114104 2010-06-28 23:21:00 I am looking to build a pc under $1000 with a monitor.
I would also like to know how well it would run newish games.
Any ideas would be great.

Are you in NZ?

1114105 2010-06-28 23:43:00 Just be careful with your RAM, saw an earilier post saying you should get DDR3 RAM, only get that if you are going to be able to utilise the triple channel functionality of it. otherwise get DDR2 RAM. GreacherTech (15784)
1114106 2010-06-29 00:08:00 DDR3 can be used in single/dual channel as well, just depends what kit you buy. Only LGA1366 mobos + CPUs support tri-channel. pablo d (15490)
1114107 2010-06-29 00:29:00 I know they can be used in single/dual channel aswell, but what's the point? why not buy DDR2 instead? I would save a little more and spend a little extra getting a mobo that does support tripple channel and even if you don't buy the extra RAM now, it will be easier to upgrade at a later stage GreacherTech (15784)
1114108 2010-06-29 00:40:00 Triple channel ability isn't the only benefit of DDR3, it also comes in much faster speeds and is getting cheaper and cheaper, whereas DDR2 is going in the other direction.

DDR2 mobos are getting harder to find now, as well as being older tech (older chipsets, no USB3/SATA6Gbps support etc).

Also, he'll have to go for an LGA1366 mobo and CPU if he wants triple channel - i.e. $450 and above just for a Core i7 CPU, on top of mobo. Ain't no room in the "budget" for that.

1114109 2010-06-29 02:45:00 why not buy DDR2 instead A person would buy what ever fits the board.
Some boards have DDR2 & DDR3 Slots, others dont. If the board takes DDR3, then thats what you have to use.

You cannot use DDR2 on a DDR3 motherboard and vise versa. They are pin incompatible. It physically will not fit, unless you like damaging your components.

Yeah, do NOT use a cheap PSU. If you do buy a cheap one and it ruins $1000 worth of brand new hardware by exploding, you will NOT be happy
