When was the last time you cleaned out the interior of your computer? How dusty is it now?
Are all the fans working?
Has the CPU ever been reseated? If so, was the correct thermal paste used?

For the record, if this problem is new, then it's unlikely to be related to the BIOS, although the BIOS update may help if it contains better fan management logic.

...If it is, it can only take 1 GB
That'll be 1GB per stick though, not 1GB total. Noting that the OP says the machine has 1.21GB of ram in it, I'm guessing they have a 256MB stick and a 1GB stick installed.

That was my initial thought too.

CPU's will "hang" the machine rather than fry themselves.

1113690 2010-06-26 08:43:00 The machine isn't crashing - it's slowing down to almost freeze state.
I cleaned the machine inside & rechecked capacitors & fans: all ok

No - have not reseated the CPU.
I normally use Artic Silver 5: ok?

The problem has been going on for some time.

Will the excessive memory cause problems?

1113691 2010-06-26 09:21:00 When activating a program the cpu races 90%+ which then stalls the machine

Does it happen with all programs or just some?

Do you know what process actually uses the CPU time? is it the program you launch or some other process?

Taskmanager will show you this under the processes tab

1113692 2010-06-26 12:05:00 Looking at the specs for the board if the one in the link given by speedy it says Max memory is one Gb. There are two DIMM slots. Possibly there may be a BIOS update to fix that or not. Sweep (90)

I normally use Artic Silver 5: ok?Yep, that's fine. I'd still be interested to know how hot the system is running - any chance you could check the CPU temp sensor values for us (ideally both at idle, and at the same time the problem is occurring)?

Will the excessive memory cause problems?Shouldn't do (and besides, I don't think you actually have too much memory anyway) - the fact that Windows is seeing more than 1GB already says that the motherboard can handle more than 1GB total, so I suspect that the 1GB restriction the spec sheet refers to is max 1GB per slot, not for the whole board.

You mentioned that this issue occurs particularly when starting programs - what's the HDD activity like at that point? You could be having one or more of the following issues:
Heavy swap activity
Badly fragmented swapfile
Badly fragmented filesystem
Full fragmented filesystem

What type of HDD do you have in this box?

Memory leak through the program?Possibly - if there's something on the system leaking memory, that could exhaust the available memory and cause very high levels of swapping. Terminating the program should free the affected memory though.

NZHawk: In task manager, does anything show up as using insanely large amounts of memory?

On the performance tab, what are the values for physical memory and commit charge?

1113695 2010-06-27 11:59:00 Just a thought, your hard drive may perhaps be faulty. Once I chucked out a perfectly good motherboard only to find that my hard drive also caused my other computer to randomly lock up as well. forrest44 (754)
