824013 2009-12-01 01:36:00 Exactly, why get Chrome OS that you can't install anything on, if you can get this? Agent_24 (57)
824014 2009-12-01 02:52:00 Because aside from one specialist application, 100% of what I do, I already do or easily can do from the browser. YMMV, but you don't have to constantly dog it just because it's not your cup of tea.

Tempted to try Presto myself, I like what Xandros did with the original EeeOS

Tempted to try Presto myself, I like what Xandros did with the original EeeOS The reason I like it Over Googles OS is you are not tied to google / The internet - and there is other apps becoming available that will work on other / existing hardware - general laptops, PC's etc.

Having the option to boot into your Normal OS or something faster to get instant access has a few advantages. Now If google make their OS do that - then it would be a LOT better. Best of both worlds really.

Not every one uses web based programs - I for example can do all my every day work without the internet - the only items I would need is email, and a browser to log into vendors sites, or download software for customers.

The other week when I was flying to Aussie, there was a couple of people with laptops doing their work - no internet - if they needed the internet then they were stuffed - obviously they didn't.

Tried Xandros when it first came out (free) , wasn't to bad, and I know they have improved it since then.

AKA Asus Express Gate Yep its the first thing I sometimes turn Off on new builds :D Some people want it some dont.

While it is good as well, its only available in Asus Motherboards, and other pre-assembled PC/Laptops. Its not available as a download.

The Xandros Presto , actually installs in windows at first, and has its own folder in the program files, then creates a Dual boot option on startup.

824018 2009-12-01 07:50:00 Does it create a loopback partition in a file somewhere on the windows FS? My work laptops at work tonight and my desktop that I'm working on is busy downloading :D Chilling_Silence (9)

Yeah - I have it on my N50Vc, but I have never used it. I am almost always never connected via ethernet cable, and I don't believe it would find and run my T-Stick...

The point of Chrome OS is SaaS, rather than using an installed program.

824021 2009-12-01 09:47:00 Whats different in the paid Presto? Chilling_Silence (9)
824022 2009-12-01 19:30:00 Whats different in the paid Presto? As in compared to what ?? :D If it's Chrome OS ---

The prestro (and other such software) allows you to boot into an instant on - well 5-7 seconds working internet desktop/connection, the same as as Chrome - But it also gives you the choice of booting into a normal operating system.

You have access to data on the HDD, you can install Apps if you want Eg: I put Open Office in Prestro yesterday.

So really an option like that gives the best of both worlds - all your data if you want - or instant internet to places like Google doc's, email etc. AND one advantage, it can be used on existing hardware , PC or Laptop.

I'm not knocking chrome OS - it will have its place, but there is better software coming out that gives a person more options - Now if Google make it so it will install on existing hardware, and options to boot into other OS's -- AND its still free - that would make it a winner.

Edited: gonna try something soon with Presto-- Stay tune as they say
