| 1114336 | 2010-06-29 01:37:00 | Hi Do any of you from this neck of the woods have a recommendation for a local PC tech? I went into one place this morning, waited for ages because there was no-one available to serve me. Whilst waiting, I heard the plonker in the shop saying that the technician working on her PC strongly advised her to remove her free anti virus programme (AVG Free) because it isn't good enough "it is free for a reason", and install a paid security suite to get proper protection. I didn't hear which one they were recommending, but there was a big display of Nortons in the shop. He said they would charge ?$70 for the programme, and half an hour of their time for installation, plus there would be an annual subscription. I don't mind people saying there are other programmes better than AVG Free, but the lame brained reason that it is no good because it is free isn't good enough. :annoyed: I felt like telling the woman that she was dealing with an unethical self serving plonker, and not to follow the recommendation, but years of indoctrination into polite behaviour stopped me. Sigh. I walked out. If they are like that, I am not going to let any of my gear anywhere near them. So, if any of you know an ethical, professional, customer centred technician in North Canterbury, I would value your recommendation! |

Now I would have told her that . They need rescuing . I don't know anyone in Canterbury sorry, someone else here may do . You could ring various ones and ask them what anti-malware they recommend as a test . . . . . . . . |

The cowboys probably know more than I do so that might not work! I have a Fujitsu Lifebook that is about 5 years old. I want to replace the hard drive and migrate everything over to the new drive. I don't have the confidence to a. buy the right replacement drive, and b. fiddle around in the innards of this tiny laptop. It is one of those things that has a 10.6 inch screen. I have replaced the RAM, so I can get into it, but that is the limit of my ability I think... |

| 1114343 | 2010-06-29 07:25:00 | There's a challenge for you pctek, give him a step by step guide. I could but he isn't keen. Besides he'd need something else to connect the drive to, so he can image it and then image it back to the new one. Which would involve more hardware. |

| 1114344 | 2010-06-29 07:48:00 | Would be quite easy -- having another PC to do the clone would be handy, but not having one is not a problem either. All you would need is some free trial software ( thinking of one in particular I'm using these days ;) ) A USB drive with enough capacity to take an Image of the current system and away you go. Hardest part would be changing over the existing drive (once again easy enough). BUT if not to keen to change drives then thats a hurdle. |
