1113769 2010-06-26 21:12:00 Has anyone ever had problems installing Wireshark where it has asked for some additional software such as .net framework to be installed. Wireshark.org documentation doesn't mention anything but I can't confirm/test till Monday when this will be required.

Any thoughts?

1113770 2010-06-26 21:40:00 Depending on which version of .net it needs, you download the files from the Microsoft download site. It needs to be installed, BEFORE you install the program. Otherwise, it wont work properly. What version of windows are you installing wireshark on? Speedy Gonzales (78)

Any thoughts?Wireshark should not require .NET at all - it's written in C (which isn't a .NET language at all), and as far as I'm aware contains nothing that is likely to depend on any part of .NET.

If you want to be sure though, just try installing it on a machine that lacks the .NET runtime - if there's any requirement you need to worry about, it'll moan.

It needs to be installed, BEFORE you install the program. Otherwise, it wont work properly.Any chance you could provide a link or two to back that up? I'm pretty sure wireshark doesn't require .NET (and therefore will work just fine without it).

1113772 2010-06-27 03:26:00 Well obviously if its asking for it, it needs it. Otherwise it wouldnt say it would it. I didnt say IT needed it. I said some programs require .net, to work properly Speedy Gonzales (78)
1113773 2010-06-27 03:46:00 Knuth,
You need to actually do some work yourself mate, this is not a one-stop shop where you can ask anything and an answer will be handed to you on a silver platter. You need to actually show some initiative yourself and do some work. Try actually installing the application before asking.
IF you're worried about it requiring something like the .NET framework, take the redist / network install files on a flash drive with you. Problem solved.
However, I see no reason why you would think that, the application uses GTK+ which it bundles with it.

Try actually *using* it first, or Google for your answer. If you're asking Google something like "Does Wireshark need .NET framework" and nothing comes up, you can assume the answer is "no", or there would be something such as a FAQ or How-To documenting it.

I rest my case:
www.google.co.nz
Compared with:
www.google.co.nz

It's clear to see that it uses GTK but does not require .NET Framework.

Speedy, if you're unsure, Google is your friend.

1113774 2010-06-27 03:49:00 I dont really care if wireshark needs .net or not. I dont use it. As I said it, I wasn't talking about it, I was talking about about programs that require it to work properly. Speedy Gonzales (78)

The OP never said wireshark was asking for .NET - he asked if anyone else had experienced wireshark asking for .NET.

I didnt say IT needed it. I said some programs require .net, to work properly...I wasn't talking about [wireshark], I was talking about about programs that require [.NET] to work properly.
As you simply stated that "It needs to be installed...Otherwise, it wont work properly", assuming that you were referring to wireshark was a reasonable assumption - hence why I asked. For the record, you didn't mention "some programs" anywhere - if you had, that would be correct.

I think Speedy thought that the OP had already tried to install Wireshark and failed due to the lack of .NET so he was simply asking what version Wireshark had requested. Presumably Speedy would have then found the relevant download page on MS and given it to the OP.

As to the "Needs to be installed before", he's correct. If Wireshark did indeed need .NET to work properly, it would have to be installed before installing Wireshark.

At no point did Speedy come out and say "yes, Wireshark needs .NET, go install before you do anything"
