1115315 2010-07-02 03:49:00 I have some word documents that start with ~$
~$drone for possums.doc

They aren't temp files as they don't end with .tmp

They can't be opened in Word
When opening in Word pad the have a line of squares...

Is this data lost?

1115316 2010-07-02 06:33:00 Files created as recovery backup in case you crash out of Word. Especially if you have set Word to save every 5 minutes, for example.
If you reopen Word after a crash you will be asked if you want to salvage/recover a file.
However, if Word hasn't offered the option to recover and you haven't got the original still open, you could try renaming to get rid of the $ in the name. It's the "$" that Word sees as "do not open this file".
And whatever you do, don't open and then SAVE in Wordpad or any other application.

1115317 2010-07-02 09:38:00 They are like temp files. They don't really exist as such. pctek (84)
1115318 2010-07-02 10:52:00 Your = possessive, you own it. You're= you are (abbreviation).
Their = possessive, they own it. There = at, in, or to a place or position
Easy to remember?

YES.
