Windows XP Home
boots to safe mode: operates fine
booting to normal windows slows down to where it seems frozen or has frozen
listening the hdd seems to be spinning excessively

diagnostics on ram & hdd: passed
ran super antispyware in safe mode: only picked up trace cookies

why does the unit freeze in normal mode & not in safe mode?
and suggestions for fix?

Thank you in advance

1115146 2010-07-01 22:48:00 boots to safe mode: operates fine That can indicate damaged drivers, or corrupted system files /programs.

Starting in safe mode stops lots of drivers/programs from starting.
Safe mode only loads in the basic drivers to boot the PC - diagnostic / Repair mode

Wipe drive - Reinstall it.

1115148 2010-07-02 03:57:00 followed your suggestion, backed up data & re-formated
use the restore CD's

installation of Windows started but I couldn't type: no response from the keyboard.
mouse was ok

power button wouldn't respond to turn off - held for a good minute nothing
now the screen is blank but the power button is lit and the hdd is spinning.

1115149 2010-07-02 04:15:00 Try using a normal XP CD, it should take the COA on the back, as long as its a OEM CD.

IF the power is not working, its possible there may also be a hardware problem.

Just finished a persons PC that did similar, wouldn't power off, strange as it may seem had to replace the HDD, and remove the 56K modem before it decided to play nice. ( this is after 2 failed windows installs from two different XP CD's)

1115150 2010-07-02 04:18:00 Ok, thank you.
now trying with a Windows XP cd - not the restore cd - reformatting..etc - so far keyboard is working nicely.

1115151 2010-07-02 04:51:00 A severely buggy program or broken installation of a program such as antivirus could also cause this Agent_24 (57)
1115152 2010-07-02 05:03:00 fresh install with Windows CD failed: no keyboard or touch pad activity.
Will try another hdd

1115153 2010-07-02 05:16:00 You'll have to install the drivers for the touchpad. If you didnt use a restore cd Speedy Gonzales (78)
