2010-06-30 09:33:00 | You can but M$ recommend that you avoid doing a upgrade install over your original OS, and do a clean install if possible windows.microsoft.com

2010-06-30 09:39:00 | You can upgrade XP to 7 by using the Upgrade designed for Windows Vista. I did. See here. (windows.microsoft.com) :)

2010-06-30 10:16:00 | Yes, use the upgrade as Trev says. But, it is possible that the W7 won't activate. I experienced this on my son's computer. The good news is that there are ways around this if it happens. Go here - www.winsupersite.com Method #2 worked for us.

You cannot upgrade XP to 7 and retain your XP files and data etc. It has to be a clean install as Gary says and you lose all your XP settings etc. You CAN use a Win 7 Upgrade disc instead of a full retail disc, this works out cheaper, but it is still a clean install, wiping XP during the process. The method has been well documented. |

2010-06-30 10:53:00 | That's useful to know, but presumably that is not the same as installing the new OS over the old one ? | Terry Porritt (14) | |
2010-07-01 08:07:00 | That's useful to know, but presumably that is not the same as installing the new OS over the old one ? I'd imagine all programs that were installed on XP will need to be reinstalled after upgrading to Windows 7. Plus, newer drivers supporting Windows 7 would need to be downloaded for the computer's hardware and any older programs that were running in XP might not run in Windows 7.
