1114721 2010-06-30 04:05:00 Hi Team

When I originally set up my new computer I used the same default location as my old box, but that has turned out to be rather inconvenient due the the new directory structure I'm using and I want to move 'Downloads' to the top of the directory tree on D:\.

Problem is, I can't find where I originally went to change it from the Windows default!

It can't be that difficult, in fact I recall making the change very quickl, but I now have a total mental block!

Forgot, OS is XP Pro

Cheers

1114722 2010-06-30 04:12:00 Make a new folder where you want it for downloads. Download a new file and choose the new folder rather than default. Future downloads will go there. Or change it in your download manager if you use one. Sweep (90)

1114724 2010-06-30 04:28:00 I have a new folder designated, but I do not seem to get the option to select it. Perhaps if I rename the unwanted destination that might pop up an option to choose a destination. The original was the Desktop of course.

I'll try renaming anyway and see what happens.

Browser is FF

Solved it! The file name Downloads seems to be reserved by Windows so it will automatically be found wherever it may be. I renamed the old one and Windows not only downloaded to the new location, it moved the contents of the old file there as well. The wonders of Windows!!

1114726 2010-06-30 05:28:00 In FF under the Tools/Options/General, have you checked the radio button "Ask me where to save files".?

Oops, I see that you have fixed it!

Er.....personally I'd just point FF to whatever folder you created or chose. Doesn't even have to be Downloads.

1114728 2010-07-01 06:14:00 I didn't realise it was FF that was designating the downloads folder, and like a lot of things in computing, it seems to be luck of the game which path you follow through various menus.

It appears that I struck it right first time when I originally set the computer up, but I had completely forgotten how or where I did it. At the time I was working with a new OS, mostly new programs (apart from my legacy DOS progs that take a bit of work to get running) so it was information overload time! :groan:
