824764 2009-10-27 20:56:00 Quite a long time ago I had a computer made up to my specs including XP home.
It was some years before I discovered the OS I was using was fraudulent.
I had paid for it but now I had a problem. The thing had been modified for some time by another firm.
Now I don't know when I was lumbered with the bad copy of XP I have.
I cannot name the firms as I have no real proof and anyway both have changed hands since then.
But I would like to purchase a legitimate copy of XP - surely there must be some disused copies around - anybody any ideas where I can get one "cheap" Having paid for umpteen Microsoft operating systems I now want to damage my pension as little as possible, but at the same time be legit.

824765 2009-10-27 21:13:00 put your case to M$ and see what they say.

some times people have talked M$ into a copy for as little as shipping costs.

824766 2009-10-27 21:45:00 When you first paid for it, you should have been given the CD and product key / COA. Do you still have these? wainuitech (129)
824767 2009-10-27 22:11:00 It may not be illegal.

WGA is known to mistakenly tell you that your OS is pirated when it's not, which is one of the many reasons I refuse to have anything to do with it.

Unfortunately changing address and things going adrift plus my bad practices in keeping absolutely everything mean I don't have these.
Pity really because I still have manuals receipts etc from 1968 when we lived in America - the equipment is still with us.
That's Life.

I wouldn't bother. Win 7 is out. Buy that instead. You've used XP all this time....

You have in fact given me good advice - but not what you intended.
I have used XP all this time is why I don't want to change. My wife's computer is XP and my cheap little laptop is XP.
Obviously I do not want to swap all three.
Anyway I very much doubt if my desktop has the power and capacity to play with Win 7
Having used all versions of DOS and DrDos plus Win95 & Win98 I'm just too darn lazy to learn another OS.

Why would you have to change all 3? Change the one with the iffy copy of Win XP. leave the others alone.

And in any case, you have been using it happily all this time, so why assume now it's dodgy?

824772 2009-10-28 02:34:00 There is a triple pack Windows 7 for about $ 6-700. Would that be a better bet, change all 3 at once. I sympathise with you, actually, nowt wrong with XP. PJ Poppa John (284)
824773 2009-10-28 07:24:00 AFAIK that pack isn't available in NZ, and won't be anytime soon:( Blam (54)
