| 825420 | 2009-10-30 03:11:00 | The issue is child murder, and what could be done about it, Mr laws suggested a volunteer program with a cash settlement, he knows as well as I do (and you presumably) that this would never get implemented, However it has caused widespread debate about the issue, more debate then the killing in Wanganui of a 2 year old child....only a few days ago. The issue is not about Nazi Germany, Nor people that hate Mr Laws. Though plenty (those in denial about the problem) would rather thats what focused on. |

| 825422 | 2009-10-30 03:34:00 | The reality is you don't know who will snap and when they will, to take it out on their kid. CYF is a failure, they see kids getting abused and they give them back. There is so much they can do. You can be in one situation before you have a kid and a totally different one when the kid is born. It the perfect world, people would just not have kid... But this can't work. Firstly, a lot of these incidents aren't caused by the parents, rather by others in the "family", elder sibling, step-parents, etc. What can you do about them? I think the headline on a child abuse case today is "post natal depression", how do you over come that? You can't. All the signs mean nothing, maori just like anyone else can be good parents or bad ones. It's a flip of the coin. Nor do I have any problem with Laws, what I do have a problem with is implanting such ideas - the ones that could never be implemented on any realistic scale, etc etc - because it's just that, him getting on the front page of tomorrow's paper, nothing else. A serious issue should not be treated as a populist publicity stunt. |

| 825428 | 2009-10-30 08:03:00 | Well, at the risk of feeding the Michael Laws venom (and I was shocked when I first read his suggestion, but can also see its merit), consider that war involves sending off our fittest specimens to the slaughter, while our weak / faulty / unhealthy members stay safe at home, and become our breeding stock. Welfare to a lesser degree achieves the same 'backwards' evolution - supporting the non-functional at the expense of the more functional. Our groups with the biggest families are the ones who are least able to afford those kids (generalisation). It is poverty breeding more poverty, and sucking from the welfare tit all the way. Now criminals and idiots also come from good homes, but sadly you will also find more criminals and idiots emanating from these lower eschelon families. On the other hand though, the silver spoon fed groups from which Laws has sprung are also the bed from which biggots and the selfish and the prejudiced tend to come from - so I'm not so sure his group should be immune from the same consideration for sterilisation. Am I alone in thinking Laws looks like a pansy in makeup? |

Therefore we can't judge all members of a particular race by the actions of some can we? Several people here have judged Laws. Some favourable and some not. But do we not use judgement every day when we go shopping for example? |
