826231 2009-11-01 09:44:00 I agree with most of the rules. How about the most stupid rule of the lot. The one where I'm turning left & I have to let the oncoming turning right vehicle cut me up. I thought that was supposed to be going Phil B (648)
826232 2009-11-01 10:04:00 I'm so stoked that buses no longer have to stop at level rail crossings... Such a pain in the arse on state highways. roddy_boy (4115)
826233 2009-11-01 10:10:00 Thanks for that - that's easier to read than the legalise I found here: www.landtransport.govt.nz

My point is that until taken to court and defended the new law is ony a law which we all know is broken, bent and or twisted every day.

If you get caught it is an allegation until proven.

Easier to read is not the law as passed and that is why you read the fine print.

The way I look at that rule (opposite of UK, & Aus I think) is that you imagine one of those micro-roundabout spots painted in the middle of the intersection & apply the roundabout rules. In that sense we're more consistent than our left-hand-driving cousins in terms of maintaining our "give way to the right" rule.

The French, for instance (I assume with a give way to the right rule - the opposite of the other left-hand-drive countries) do the opposite UK on roundabouts (at least the large ones in Paris, as far as I can remember), where the traffic on the roundabout gives way to traffic entering. Shouldn't the Brits/Aussies do that if their other intersection rules say to give way to the left?

Where does that show up in the new rules?
And surely there's still the rule that where there are two lanes for you to turn into each of you must go in the lane nearest you - and if you want the other lane you pull across when there's a gap? It's stupid to wait at a green left turn signal for the driver opposite you who should be turning into the right-hand lane - and you should be going through to the left-hand lane. (A lot of people do that though - a long queue behind them and waste of a green light!)

I think Phil was referring to the revision of the right-hand Give Way rule that was talked about beforehand, but not implemented in this bunch of changes. I'm in favour of the status quo on that one - it's easy to remember if you treat the situation as though a roundabout existed.

I must admit to being cautious when turning left on a green as you described - mainly because I don't trust the idiot turning right to go into their lane. I'll normally wait & turn just as the other guy comes into his lane when I know he's aware of me moving at the same time.

The one that really tees me off is the recent change - last year or so - regarding indicating on roundabouts (indicate where you want to go prior to the roundabout, then indicate when you're turning off it). Although it's common sense, it doesn't seem to have greatly increased the number of drivers indicating, plus there's now a section of the population that indicate left (& in some cases, right??) before coming to the roundabout & then drive straight through - getting that 2nd signal in early! Nearly caught me out a few times, when I start moving & suddenly this moron has carried on in a straight line after indicating left!
Personally, I only do the lefthand indication as I'm leaving on the big roundabouts where the waiting traffic doesn't have much chance of seeing you enter it.
