824822 2009-10-28 01:34:00 I think some folks are missing the point... from what I read, the belt itself is okay. It seems like the mechanism is the issue - perhaps just a spring or some such thing. Greg (193)

Not so,Prefect is correct, they will give a mechanism with new belt at wreckers.

824824 2009-10-28 02:28:00 Why not go to Repco or that Cheap???? motor parts place & price a new one? That will tell you if the mechanic is overcharging. According to the TV Ads the Cheap??? place will fit it for you. PJ Poppa John (284)
824825 2009-10-28 03:33:00 Excessive if you ask me.
I'm with the wreckers scenario - way better idea.

I was quoted $30 inc 2nd hand part to fix wiper linkage not long ago.
Took the car up, rang hours later and it wasn't done. Seems 2nd hand part wasn't in stock and a new 2nd hand part was to be ordered from wreckers in town and job was now going to be $120 ($60 for part).

I told him not to bother, went up and got my car and told him not to do that sort of thing to me, he protested and said I could pay it off etc etc, I said prices going up loads after original cost wasn't on and we'd DIY.

Did too for $45 which was the parts plus extras we didn't use but have kept for spares.

Stuff rip off mechanics, let them get away with it and they'll always do it.

824826 2009-10-28 04:27:00 I seem to remember some sort of pendulum is incorporated in the mechanism.
You can notice this if you try and put the belt on when on a slope.

824827 2009-10-28 05:10:00 I went to Pick-A-Part ( Need own tools (19 mm to 21 mm socket I think) and they require you to wear covered footwear. You might be able to use other makes/models" target="_blank">www.pickapart.co.nz/) and removed and paid $14 and $1 entrance fee (about 9 months ago), for a good condition full front seat belt. Need own tools (19 mm to 21 mm socket I think) and they require you to wear covered footwear. You might be able to use other makes of belts -there should be plenty of belts... kahawai chaser (3545)
824828 2009-10-28 05:34:00 thanks for the feedback guys. Ive asked him to give me an actual price for the whole job so he is going to find a more exact cost. In the meantime Ill ring around a few parts places and see what the actual cost of the unit is. The money isnt actually a problem as Im more time poor then cash but I just wanted to see if I was getting ripped off or not. Thanks for all the ideas / feedback.

824829 2009-10-28 06:50:00 My front driver side seat belt has the opposite problem, it is slow to retract properly. At the last WOF check, I was warned that there was a problem with it. The mechanic said to spray some silicon spray onto it and it should come right. I have done that, but it still seems to stick a bit. So, I am very interested to know what it might cost to get it fixed. It could be a spring tension thing I guess.
