1115258 2010-07-02 02:19:00 Only has 256 Meg ram, running very slow, 50 processes, ran Malwarebytes to check for spy ware, found no spyware, started running really slow, rebooted and came up with message:

A disk read error occurred
Press Cntrl+Alt+Del to restart.

does not restart just repeats message.

What to do now? What are keys for recovery partition?

1115259 2010-07-02 03:06:00 First thing I'd try is boot from a bootable CD, something like Linux, see if the drive or the contents of the drive are visible.

The disk read error could be a failed or failing HDD. "If" the Drive has failed, then no amount of recovery will work.

1115260 2010-07-02 03:15:00 Ok don't have bootable CD at moment, will try when I get one from home.

Anything else I can do, I think it tried to boot from WLAN 802.11g CardBus Adaptor which owner put in DVD drive to use wireless and left in; because I heard the dvd drive spinning up like crazy and it preceded HDD in boot order, I have changed boot order in bios to HDD first but no change in behaviour.

1115261 2010-07-02 05:51:00 Just got home and looked at my emergency disks, I have Ultimate Boot CD 501, Damn Small Linux 2.2, ERD Commander 2008 and System Rescue CD x86 0.2.15, which one should I use? zqwerty (97)
1115262 2010-07-02 05:53:00 Anything that will show the drive - I'd use ERD commander then Linux if ERD cant find the drive.

Its only to test if the drive / files are visible.

1115263 2010-07-02 09:24:00 So are you saying that if the files are visible to then not proceed with further action using the disk, I have already tried Alt+F10 to invoke recovery partition with no result.

This laptop has Chinese writing on the bottom so it may be a re-install of US XP, and may not even have a recovery partition.

Assuming files are visible what is next step?

I am next going in to work on Monday afternoon so that will be earliest for analysis of HDD status.

1115264 2010-07-02 09:40:00 Using a Live CD, it may show if there is a recovery partition (may not either).

The idea behind the "reading of the HDD" is trying to determine if the "A disk read error occurred" message is simply corrupted programs/OS or if the HDD has a problem being accessed -- that error can be caused by either faulty software, or faulty Hardware or even failed sectors on the drive.

Few other things to read (www.tomshardware.com) first answer: it can be a real pain in the Butt trying to find the fault :(

You can also try resetting the BIOS back to default settings.

1115265 2010-07-02 10:13:00 Thanks for the help so far wainuitech, will wait for Monday afternoon now, have plenty of other work to do this weekend whilst the Sun is shining. zqwerty (97)
1115266 2010-07-02 11:07:00 Run seatools from ultimate boot disk and see if the hard disk is ok. Alex B (15479)
1115267 2010-07-02 14:03:00 Will do on Monday Alex B if I have time, I'm doing graphics for adverts but was asked to look at laptop as it was running very slowly, and it died whilst I was evaluating it. zqwerty (97)
