825595 2009-10-30 08:05:00 So I was reading this (www.stuff.co.nz) and noticed the parts about microsoft and apple creating operating systems to run on lower end hardware.

I dont know about you guys but I would rather have a PC that required 3GB of ram and the operating system had some amazing new features. I know people who want something that runs well on "1GB Ram and my good old pentium 4", but what about the people who have speedy PCs with Intel i7s and 8GB ram? I want something that utilizes these specs and not just for gaming.

Are we always going to be getting software developed to run on old PCs?

So basically, how much further is the PC going to go for the average home user? Do they really need any more that 3GB ram and dual core cpus for basic stuff?

In 10 years time what will the average PC users home PC consist of? Touch screens? 10GB ram, 8 core cpus? 5+ graphics cards?

Post your thoughts below.

(haha kinda ramblings but I needed somewhere to write down my thoughts and I am too lazy to order it but I hope you get the general gist of it lol):waughh:

825596 2009-10-30 08:09:00 I read that article this morning ,and immediately dismissed it as piffle, Piffle written by an Apple fanatic trying their best not to let it show.

If it were on paper it would rank slightly below used toilet paper.

825597 2009-10-30 08:10:00 Well, if software developers developed their stuff properly, with proper attention to memory usage, we may not need too much ram.

Gone are the days of developers trying to squeeze everything to run optimally.

edit:, I recall that article, a google maniac. They really need to realise that an ad company shouldn't be in complete crontrol of your pc.

825598 2009-10-30 08:14:00 When were those days?

As far as I can recall all new releases are designed to cripple any hardware more then a year old.

Hell, I've been doing many projects with Premier Pro CS3, Just "trailed" the latest (CS4) and its unusable,Just trying to edit a short clip was just not happening, if I wanted to use it I would need to replace most of my PC.

My work rate would have plummeted

I think he means operating system devs .

825600 2009-10-30 08:19:00 I think he means operating system devs.

I'd assume he was referring to all Software developers, OS devs (especially MS devs) have done some shocking work in the area of memory management.

And everyone else just expects you to upgrade....

Those with i5/i7s are small minority, and I think it's safe to assume those with older Core 2 Duo/upcoming Core i3s will make the majority of PCs when compared to i5/i7s.

And besides, what kind of super-fricking-do-everything-OS do you want that will fully utilise an i7 with 8GB RAM?!?!!

825602 2009-10-30 08:25:00 I think one of MS's biggest mistakes is marketing the OS as a stand alone suite to people whose computers have no ability to run them, and allowing the big brands to pump out trillions of under performing PC's struggling to run the OS.

But hey, its all about the money and preying on peoples ignorance, not in having happy customers.

Well, many of them are happy due to their ignorance.

haha I can imagine someone running windows 95 saying "OMG WHAT DO YOU NEED 1GB OF RAM FOR?" "OMG 1TB? THATS LIKE THE SIZE OF THE WHOLE INTERNET!"

and god knows but it would have to be something completly epic lol.

825604 2009-10-30 09:49:00 Some of the best performing programs ever written did not even require an OS. R2x1 (4628)
