1116719 2010-07-06 23:09:00 Have a Seagate hard drive that would not work right in an enclosure.

I ran the Seagate Seatools program on it and it found and fixed two errors.

I then ran the diagnostics again and it came up clean last night.

My question is, should I continue using it, or should I claim warranty on it (2012)

I would return it. Why should you take the risk? it may break down anytime.

1116721 2010-07-06 23:24:00 Warranty. Weather it takes 2 hours or 2 years it will continue to fail.

What kind of errors? File structure errors or hardware errors?
Hardware errors, yes. Files, probably not.

1116723 2010-07-07 00:10:00 I'm not sure. I've only got the eight character code from the test.

Doh!

1116724 2010-07-07 00:25:00 I think what Seatools is saying is that it found two dodgy sectors and has reallocated them.

This does NOT mean they are fixed, and your drive is quite likely to develop more in the near future and possibly fail outright.

To check this for certain, run a program which can read the SMART attributes of the drive.

SpeedFan inside Windows or HDAT2 for a bootable CD etc will do fine. Check the reallocated sector count, it will probably be 2 or higher. If it is, you should look into replacing the drive.

1116726 2010-07-07 02:09:00 Here is what I get from that bootable app.

Looks like I should claim a warranty replacement.

Edit:
Could a flaky enclosure cause some of these errors?

1116727 2010-07-07 02:33:00 Ultra DMA CRC error rate is usually caused by bad cabling (or so they say) but I'm sure a fault in the drive itself could also result in this number increasing

That uncorrectable error count value could indicate problems with the disk though.

1116728 2010-07-08 00:52:00 Who do I contact to get it replaced under warranty.

Seagates site lists VST Ltd and they won't handle the drive (no longer a distributer). They suggest Ingram Micro.

Thoughts, ideas???
