| 1116692 | 2010-07-06 23:07:00 | I have a desktop PC and also a laptop, both connected to the same wireless network at home. I've just turned on my PC and instead of automatically connecting like it usually does, it didn't. I clicked on 'connect to a network' and got a message to say Windows could not detect any networks. I clicked on 'diagnose problem' and it said there was no wireless device installed. I tried restarting and I've checked all the connections but still keep getting the same message. I expected to get the same message from the laptop but it has connected to the network without any trouble so the connection and wireless router is obviously working. I have my emails all set up to come into Outlook on the PC rather than the laptop so although I can check them online from the laptop, it's a pain to have to work on two machines. Any idea of what may be causing this? I did download the updated Comodo firewall onto both machines in the past few days, but if it's not causing problems with the laptop, I can't see that being the source of the problem. I disabled it on the PC but still couldn't connect to a network. I did notice when I turned on both machines after downloading the update that it said it had detected a new connection. I just closed that box on the laptop but when prompted on the PC this morning I clicked a box to automatically detect new networks. Is that likely to have done anything? Now it won't detect anything at all! I've just tried again and got the same response - and when I clicked on 'diagnose problem' it said something about Windows not detecting any problem with the computer's connection. So what gives? I've got a Compaq Presario with a D-Link DIR-300 wireless router - that seems to be working fine for the laptop to connect, but not the PC. |

To turn on network discovery, follow these steps: Click to open Network and Sharing Center. If network discovery is off, click the arrow button to expand the section, click Turn on network discovery, and then click Apply. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. I had obviously clicked on the wrong thing when prompted this morning and now all is working fine again! Thank god the laptop was still connecting! |
