1115631 2010-07-03 15:07:00 Hi Everybody,

My PC has recently stopped providing any sound in some situations. But it does work in others. When viewing videos in Firefox (e.g., on the New York Time homepage) there is no sound when viewing videos. There is also no sound when using iTunes, the DivX video player, or the stand alone Flash Video viewer. However, I do get sound when viewing videos using Windows Media Player. Interestingly, when I start a video using Media Player it initially has no sound either. But, if I fast forward the video by clicking on the progress bar below the video the sound begins working and then works perfectly on WMP after that. I haven't found any way to get the sound to work within the web browser or any of the previously mentioned applications.

Additionally, the PC has slowed dramatically in the last couple of weeks. I can't honestly say the slowdown occurred at the same time the sound stopped working.

I run full system scans using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes once each week. Last ran them yesterday. Neither one is picking up anything at this time. I defragged my C: drive this morning. I also run CCleaner on a regular basis, last cleaning the system yesterday.

I searched this forum for people having similar sound issues and found some advice to uninstall/reinstall Adobe Flash. Did that. No difference.

At this point I'm at the limit of my knowledge and would appreciate any advice others might have. Here is a printout of my system from Hijack This:

1115633 2010-07-03 19:45:00 OK. So I did this and it didn't seem to help. In fact the PC simply shut itself down in the middle of the process. After rebooting and then finishing the removal of the two items I rebooted again and got a big red warning that my Virus scan (Security Essentials) wasn't working. I couldn't get it to activate. I rebooted again and Security Essentials didn't start. Rebooted a third time and Security Essentials seems to be working now. I also got a screen I've never seen before. It seemed to be an Internet Explorer screen, and it said the system could not navigate to the requested site (or something like that). I didn't have any browser open at the time.

But PC is still slow and my sound still doesn't work.

What is a Sony DRM? I dont see any reference to it in my log file.

Get Spybot and Malware Bytes, make sure both are updated, then run them both. Do it in Safe Mode, run MMSE in Safe Mode again too.

1115635 2010-07-03 22:15:00 DRM = digital rights management meant to stop people from pirating stuff gary67 (56)
1115636 2010-07-04 01:53:00 This C:\WINNT\CDProxyServ.exe belongs to the Sony DRM install. Its a rootkit. If you dont have anything to do with Sony installed, (you probably had a CD / CD's, that installed this), get the tool under removal (www.symantec.com) then run it

These files also belong to it
