827589 2009-11-06 02:29:00 (CNN) -- Before making judgments about the shootings at Fort Hood, a thorough investigation needs to take place, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas said Thursday.

"It is imperative that we take the time to gather all the facts, as it would be irresponsible to be the source of rumors or inaccurate information regarding such a horrific event," Cornyn said in a statement.

"Once we have ascertained all the facts, working with our military leaders and law enforcement officials on the ground, we can determine what exactly happened at Fort Hood today and how to prevent something like this from ever happening again," he said.

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, shot and killed 11 soldiers and one civilian before being killed*, officials said. Thirty people were wounded, officials at the Army base said. A federal official said Hasan is a U.S. citizen of Jordanian descent.

Cornyn, a Republican, said people should not jump to conclusions about what happened and why.

"We do not yet have these details," the statement said.

President Obama, who was speaking at a conference in Washington, said his administration "will make sure that we get answers to every single question about this horrible incident."

* Latest news: The shooter is in "stable condition" in the hospital - not dead at all as previously reported.

Actually where the shooting took place was an area where there are very few if any weapons . He used two handguns - nothing very high-powered or multi-clipped and got taken down by civilian police department shooters - imagine that!

The area he was in was a final mustering place for outgoing soldiers who needed some final shots (NZ= inoculations) and dental work to meet the regs for OUTCONUS deployment .

The Muslim communities here in SoCal are feigning outrage and disillusionment over the stereotyping of a Muslim as a killer - even though that exactly what he was .

He had posted several webpages about suicide bombing being the next step to godship and that was not sufficient to raise any red flags in the intelligence communities even though he was really upset (so it's reported) about his near-future deployment to the Middle East, next week .

He was being considered as a possible malingerer and malaprop, but that's all Monday morning quarterbacking by now .

43 people shot. 12 dead.

Even as a soldier that's **** ain't right if all he had was two handguns. Come on this is from a Rambo or Leone movie.
Surely there were guards and such who could and should have stopped him.
Killing that many people with handguns and civilian weapons is unimaginable. Hell, most snipers in WW2 didn't half half those kills.

SJ, any links to reports of him with suicide bomber and about posts etc?
That thing sounds like it was planned, political correctness can go to hell and the Muslim community should be outraged at themselves.

This is why I hate religion.

What would happen if they red flagged them?

He would probably sue the government for discrimination and all the muslims groups would all scream "racist".

Political correction ***** every one up the ***hole.

Army officials said they did not know whether the handguns used in the assault were military-issued service weapons or personal weapons.

The rules for carrying weapons on an Army post are standard throughout all bases, service officials said. The only personnel allowed to openly display weapons on the base are military police, Banks said. Service weapons are checked daily and are usually only allowed to be removed from an arms room for training on a range or maintenance. Personal weapons must be kept locked and registered with the base provost marshal. The military police keep a record of all of the weapons on a base, Army officials said.

Ft. Hood, which sprawls across 339 square miles of central Texas hill country, is the world's largest military installation. It supports two full armored divisions -- the 1st Cavalry Division and the 4th Infantry Division -- and is home to more than 70,000 soldiers, civilian workers and family members. It is the largest single employer in Texas.

Reporting from Los Angeles and Washington - In an act of violence that sent shock waves through the American military establishment and raised questions about base security, a man armed with two handguns allegedly opened fire Thursday afternoon on the grounds of Ft. Hood, the country's largest military base. Twelve people were killed and 31 others injured. The suspect, an Army psychologist, was shot and in custody. The base, home to about 70,000 soldiers and their families, was locked down.

Army officials identified the attacker as Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, a major who was recently promoted from captain and worked at the Darnall Army Medical Center, Ft. Hood's hospital. Officials had previously reported that Hasan was among the dead.

Officials with access to Hasan's records told the Associated Press that Hasan, who is single and has no children, worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for six years before being transferred to the Texas base in July. They said he received a poor performance evaluation while at Walter Reed.

I'm working on the local news sites here in the US and trying to get a link to send. They talked about his blog and his defending suicide bombing as a quick trip to god and this may get seriously redacted as the time goes by. It has happened before that the early blurbs get pulled.

AP: Officials had concerns about Fort Hood suspect

By LARA JAKES (AP) – 3 hours ago

WASHINGTON — Federal law enforcement officials say the suspected Fort Hood, Texas, shooter had come to their attention at least six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats .

The officials say the postings appeared to have been made by Maj . Nidal Malik Hasan, who was killed during the shooting incident that left least 11 others dead and 31 wounded . The officials say they are still trying to confirm that he was the author . They say an official investigation was not opened .

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case .

One of the Web postings that authorities reviewed is a blog that equates suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades .

"To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate . Its more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause," said the Internet posting . "Scholars have paralled (sic) this to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers . "
