| 826729 | 2009-11-02 23:08:00 | So what's happening here? Seems Mister Key can't control his minister's partner's first class flights. A few weeks and months ago he was in an uproar, and now... Is Rodney Hide that powerful that he can make the PM go back on his statements? Just because a few ****ers decided their wives and girlfriends should go with them, now Key says they can? Seriously, why bother saying something in the first place? Being am MP/Minister isn't a right, they know what they signed up for and how much they would be payed, if they can't afford to take their partners abroad on their own income, they should leave them at home. Do the SAS boys posted in Afghanistan take their wives there for sight seeing? Come on Mister Key, you gotta be tougher than that. Mister Rodney will walk all over you if you continue... Maybe next week he will ask you to resign in favor of himself... www.nzherald.co.nz |

Politicians are politicians - what do you expect? |

| 826733 | 2009-11-02 23:44:00 | I was under the impression Key did change/amend the law... No - he told ministers not to use their ministerial budgets to fund their partners' travel (which Rodney Hide stuck to). That was a rule he introduced, because he has the power to do so. In these cases, the ministers such as Rodney Hide were using their long-service travel discounts as an MP (which are funded out of a separate budget) to subside their partners' travel costs. |

| 826735 | 2009-11-03 00:54:00 | JK has control over Ministerial Services. He has no say over Parliamentary Services who are responsible for the administration of MPs perks, among other things. All he can do is ask for some restraint during the recessionary times. Nor are the 'flights' free for all. There are certain qualifying criteria which must be met before any MP or a spouse can take advantage of these. If you want to know the difference between Ministerial Services and Parliamentary Services, look it up. | Richard (739) | ||

As far as I am aware, the Speaker is responsible parliamentary expenses, am I wrong? And as far as I know, the Speaker is a National party member, who was effectively appointed by Mr Key, am I wrong? So do you think that Key has no sway over ol' Lockwood? And that he could not propose his agenda to Parliament publicly? It would be seen by the the common folk as disheartening seeing MPs earning close to 150k, not having to pay for housing, transport etc and overseas flights? It's a good election agenda, but it might make him unpopular with his goons and at the end of the day, that is the problem. |

| 826737 | 2009-11-03 01:42:00 | Funnily enough I actually voted at the last general election unlike some here who stated they were not going to vote. I did not vote for the National or Labour party but I must say that John Key is starting to impress me in so far as he seems to have a sense of humour and seems to take questions on the fly by the news media. Compared to the sour faced ***** that was the PM before then I have to say I want to give him more time to prove himself. |
