| 827539 | 2009-11-07 20:50:00 | What did the Romans do? they gave the wild pommy tribesman some culture. Completely off topic: the enemies of the Romans had their own culture, but because their culture differed to that of the Romans, they were considered 'barbaric'. This fallacy then survives because history is written by the winners. For example, the Celts (btw it is pronounced with a hard C) got their name from the Greek word Keltoi which loosely translated as 'barbarians from the North'. However, the term 'Celts' was ascribed to the tribes we know as Celtic - an individuals affiliation was for his tribe and/or tribal leader first, and the affiliation for allied tribes against common enemies came second. The Celts may have seemed barbaric to the uber-civilised Greeks, but they certainly had culture. The Romans didn't actually 'win' against the Celts because they never fully subjugated all of the Celtic tribes - it was because they weren't operating with a central authority that they could resist a complete takeover by the Romans. But because theirs was a verbal history, and the Romans had a written history, it was the Roman version that survived. I could go on all day, but I won't. Personally I find it fascinating, I hope others do too..... As an interesting exercise, change 'Roman' for 'Colonial' and/or 'English', and change 'Celts' for 'Maoris' in the 2 paragraphs above....nothing really changes does it? Andrew P.S. Nice quote from Life of Brian martynz! Like it... [edit] P.P.S Darn it! You posted a link on Life of Brian while I was typing my post.....we certainly get a laugh out of that one liner whenever someone uses it...... |

It is now up to the White Mother****ers to respond. Like a cancerous growth, the sooner you deal with it, the better your chances. No doubt some will just want to apply make-up so it doesnt look so bad, but that wont fix the problem. He must be excised! |

It would be bad enough if he were leader of the Mongrel Mob, but hes not, hes a politician that the WMFs are paying his wages and travel. For the Maori Party to have any credibility at all they must expel him. |

I dont care whether the Surgeon that excises this cancerous growth is Black, White or Brindle. As long as the operation is a success. |
