827450 2009-11-06 17:47:00 Interesting... the general comment is that lots of people use Linux for a fair bit of their work but revert to Windows for stuff that they can't do on Linux.

This in its self, is an indicator of why Windows is on such a high % of computers.

I have played with Linux but always come back to Windows thinking "What the heck, this works without any hassles!"

Exactly - if most software vendors could be convinced to ship Linux versions of their closed-source apps, Windows' market share would plummet overnight. Sadly, not many vendors care enough to bother :groan:.

827452 2009-11-06 20:27:00 I primarily use Windows, for gaming. I can technically do everything else on Linux. I can't wait til Linux is widely supported by game developers, or until wine is uber. Netsukeninja (13296)
827453 2009-11-06 21:15:00 There is of course Crossover Games, don't use it myself,
but I understand it is based on WINE but optimized to run games well.

Or Cedega..

Of course these are both commercial products and the question has to be.
Why would I pay to play my Windows games on Linux?
Who knows, but there are some people doing it, otherwise these products
would have vanished long ago.
As for my favourite OS?
Puppy Linux has many uses especially on old or limited hardware.
But PCLinuxOS is the one I go back to time and time again.
Quite like the new version of Ubuntu Studio though.

827455 2009-11-06 21:59:00 windows, simply because its all ive used, and i know enough to fix it(with a little help).

games are also a factor.

i'd only try Mac OS if i won it or they were giving it away for free.

linux: tried ubuntu in a virtual pc but nothing grabbed my attention, would rather stick with what i know

827456 2009-11-07 07:40:00 I have also tried Ubuntu and found it quite good to use. I may move to Ubuntu in the future.

The downside I found was that there wasn't a decent flight simulator for Ubuntu.

827458 2009-11-07 10:02:00 I like:

*Windows for gaming
*Linux for doing weird stuff
*OSX for laughing at (and occasionally trying hackintosh versions of)

827459 2009-11-07 20:18:00 I'm all for Windows. It's what I know, and the best stable platform for gaming. As well as the fact it's universal and what most of the population uses, it just makes it more compatible with everything without error. Windows my number 1.

Having experienced 'the Mac', it is amazing with some of it's software for video editing, photo editing, music editing etc etc etc.. however, the platform and interface is very difficult to use, options and controls are difficult to circumnavigate, and on a network they have a hard time connecting to printers, and other external devices. That is only from my point of view, it maybe not be PC, but how I have viewed them they are very abnormal and not for the average user - really only for specialists I think.

I am trying Linux, well trying.. having hardware issues with my spare PC for testing. I can't really rate it because I've never really spent much time on it. However, I think it might be good...hmmm..

Anyway, Windows all the way. =D
