I did not think that their was fireworks at Auckland Domain.

Even with the light rain we have in Auckland their are fireworks going off all around where I am.

Fifteen years retired and I still cannot stop being an irritating teacher. Your "their" should be "there"

Needless to say the word "was" should also be replaced by "were".

I can be even more irritating if I try hard.

"Was" is probably acceptable in that context I would have thought. "Fireworks" could be considered a mass noun, no?
