1116592 2010-07-07 02:41:00 I am using DEll, not HP, but when every PC boot up, there is a prompt, it will tell which key exactly bring you to the access of BIOS setting, isn't it there? is you hit that key, but still no luck, then I guess maybe there is something not right with your keyboard. _galaxy (15847)
1116593 2010-07-07 04:21:00 The error message (7B) does not mentioned any specific driver etc, nor does it mention "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" as mentioned by Agent_24.

pctek you mention to run chkdsk however to do so I need to be able to access Windows setup don't I? From there I could run chkdsk, but since I can't access the BIOS and change boot order I can't do this.

wratterus the machine is an old one so I don't recall, but I used to use AVG (now use MSE for my new pc's) so it probably does have AVG installed. So this could possibly be the issue. Sounds like you fixed it how I am planning to as well - just I can't seem the get into BIOS to change boot order??

I know the prompt that should come up for setup (as it does on my other pc's), not sure why it doesn't on this one, couldbe my monitor I didn't consider that though I've never had an issue with this monitor before. Possibly it is a little slow on firing up and misses this message, but surely one of the keys should get me into boot... I'll give the button mashing another go at home tonight. If no luck I might try a different keyboard and see if it makes any difference?

A new hard drive was installed on this in the past I think, but quite some time ago & pc has worked fine since so don't see why this would be causing any problem now?

Thank you!

1116594 2010-07-07 04:40:00 are you tapping the key or holding it down?

usualy you tap it, but apparently for some reason with Pavilions you may need to hold it down

try it... the F1 key, hold it down after you hit the start button

1116595 2010-07-07 04:42:00 I have been tapping, this is what I would normally do! Will try holding down as well, fingers crossed :)

Thank you!

1116596 2010-07-07 04:44:00 Have you checked to see if its on AHCI in the BIOS?? If it is, and you didnt install SATA drivers (when windows was installed), it'll crash with that stop error Speedy Gonzales (78)
1116597 2010-07-07 04:46:00 he has to get into the bios before he can do anything Speedy - thats his problem! bevy121 (117)
1116598 2010-07-07 04:48:00 Ratty, seems there are a few people not reading the info you've posted properly, sorry 'bout that. :p

Could you let us know the exact model of Pavilion?

What I would try is resetting the BIOS manually (should be a jumper on the motherboard) and then try - some older pavilions were F1 to enter, some of the slightly newer ones are F10 (as has already been established). If you let us know the exact model we can confirm 100% which key you need to be bashing.

Are you sure that the keyboard is working properly?

1116599 2010-07-07 05:43:00 I'll check the model number later.
Keyboard seems to be working fine as once the pc is up and going I can use it to navigate the windows loading options (safe mode etc) + all lights are working on it. I've used it for years without issue, can't imagine it would be causing any issue.

I've never reset bios manually - does pulling out the battery then putting it in few mins later do the same thing as the cables you've mentioned? I feel a bit nervous about doing this without further instruction on exactly what/how to do.

Thank you!

Yeah pulling the battery for a few mins (make it 10 and also hold down the power button for a few secs when the power is switched off to drain all the power out of the board) should do it. Normally there is a jumper near the battery you can use to reset the BIOS. There is very little that can go wrong, just make sure you touch the case of the PC to release any static electricity before touching the board.

Something like this might be helpful for resetting the BIOS.

Your board won't necessarily be the same as that but that should give you a bit of an idea.

1116601 2010-07-07 10:23:00 I pulled out the battery, discharged the power button, put it all back together, started it up and then started my button mashing campaign. Still no sign of the "press __ to enter setup" message at all. I went through every f key + esc doing holding and tapping with basically no results, I only found the following: pressing f5 or f8 brings up the windows startup options (which I already knew). Also, on occasion pressing f9 seems to make one minor change to the loading screen. Here is a picture of the first info that comes up after I power on the pc. The minor change that occurs sometimes is that on the bottom line after all the dots it will sometimes have the word "successful" - no idea if this is significant or not. Whether the word successful comes up or not the result remains the same - still getting the same stop error.
