1116530 2010-07-06 22:46:00 Hmm I think the program for this tuner has something for that. But last time I used it, it did jack. I thought that was for the UK, not NZ? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1116531 2010-07-06 23:44:00 Hi Thanks for your input. Just to quote from the link provided previously:

"Thanks to the integrated HD3000-class graphics unit, the 780G and 780V chipsets enjoy complete HD video decoding support in the form of ATI’s UVD (Universal Video Decoder). As a result, CPU load is greatly reduced when playing back HD-video content such as HD-DVDs, Blu-ray discs, HDTV or recorded HD content.
Since the on-board graphics unit comes with hardware decoding support for MPEG-2, H.264 and VC-1, a separate add-in card is no longer required to enjoy hardware video acceleration for these codecs. All that’s left for the CPU to do is to decode the HDCP copy protection and the audio stream"

I have a custom compiled Mythubuntu version with some instructions so I am happy to give this a trial if only to extend my very basic knowledge of Linux,as I said the backup is W7( and its Media Centre)

1116532 2010-07-07 07:08:00 Deimos- AMD CPUs a bit of a maze to me! Not interested in to much performance at the cost of heat ,this is a dedicated machine in a smaller media style case, everything has to run cool and quiet. I only picked this one for its 45W it needs, and it did not seem too old??

Keep in mind that 45W is the MAXIMUM powerdraw that CPU will use, if you get a 95W CPU in most cases it will draw less than a third of that.

My firebreathing i7 overclocked to 4.2Ghz is only using around 25W while browsing the net, while putting it under max load it jumps up to 130W

1116533 2010-07-07 09:14:00 Hi Deimos, basically the cpu just needs to run Windows7 without any startling performance, the demands on it will be minimal, to quote from my original limk:

"With its 128 KB L2 cache and 1.80 GHz clock speed, the Sempron 64 3200+ is too slow for Windows Vista. A full three minutes pass before the system has completed the start-up process and the CPU load falls below 10%. Still, 1080p Full-HD playback at a resolution of 1920x1080 doesn’t pose any problem whatsoever for the CPU when running PowerDVD 7.3"

So its got to run cool and run W7, if Mythubuntu dosn't work out, plus there is a good graphics card overclocking option if its not quite fast enough. I don't want to do this, but if its very cool to start off I'll have the option if needed, so would it handle W7 OK Its good to know that the 45watt rating is the maximum.

1116534 2010-07-07 09:51:00 Sorry forgot to ask if the AMD Athlon II X2 240 2.8GHz is compatible with the AM2+ socket for this board? PPp (9511)
1116535 2010-07-07 09:59:00 It maybe (www.gigabyte.us) Speedy Gonzales (78)
1116536 2010-07-07 10:45:00 I use an athlon 6000+ in my media pc with no probs, with a 7300gs. Not grunty by any means but does the trick hueybot3000 (3646)
1116537 2010-07-07 11:22:00 I'm a bit out of touch with CPUs especially AMD's , but as I said I'm just after something that will run on W7 OK (just OK) if I need it for its media centre. if I get lost in Mythbantu. Any recommendations ? PPp (9511)
1116538 2010-07-07 11:24:00 If Media center, in Win7 supports the tuner, use that Speedy Gonzales (78)
1116539 2010-07-07 11:31:00 I had an Opteron 175 (dual core 2.2Ghz) that could barely play 1080p in Win 7 media centre.
I'm not sure how well the Athlon performs but from what I hear it is pretty bad, even a C2D downclocked to 2Ghz could beat it (in games at least) I'd be concerned...
