1116465 2010-07-06 09:30:00 Find a reasonable IT engineer, if the drives ok it shouldn't take them long to put in another enclosure for you. If the drive is stuffed then it may cost a packet to get the data back. gcarmich (10068)
1116466 2010-07-08 11:08:00 one last question, if i take out the hard drive can I then permamently fit this into my machine (presuming I fond it works) or does it need to go back into another external enclosure ?

thanks

1116467 2010-07-09 01:50:00 Its just a HD in case & can be fitted into a pc.
You MAY need hardware to mount it (if its 2.5") & PC will need to support its interface : sata/ide.

As long as it was off when it was dropped, the HD may be OK. they are rated for some pretty big G shocks (when off).

1116468 2010-07-09 02:01:00 OTOH it doesn't take much of a drop to generate some rather large G's .... fred_fish (15241)

So I've opened up the external hard drive and the pc and have found that the hard drive is SATA and the pc is IDE. What i would ideally like to be able to do is install the hard drive as a slave drive to the IDE. Can i get a adapter that'll aloow this or is there another method I should be looking at ? Or would i be better off still asking somebody with SATA to plug in the hard drive and see if it works on their machine first ?

thanks

1116470 2010-07-11 10:26:00 One other thing I have just looked up my motherboard and it seems that it does not have any SATA ports that I can find. (www.ecs.com.tw) globe (11482)
1116471 2010-07-11 12:28:00 If you don't have SATA ports then find someone who does.

You said it doesn't show in "My Computer" but does it show up in "Disk Management" ?

Negative.

1116473 2010-07-12 00:32:00 Guess you'll have to try connecting it directly then

I wouldn't be surprised if the enclosure was faulty, I had one randomly die

Have plugged it straight into a SATA drive and no luck. Things don't look that hopeful now it seems...unless there are other suggestions out there ?

cheers

Forgot to say also rang seagate/maxtor as it is a 7200.11 and read the sn to them. Apparently there are no issues with the firmware on this drive as they have had on others over the last couple of years.......
