1116417 2010-07-06 06:19:00 Incorrect, the region locks are indeed part of the drives firmware. hoanikai, vlc play's your dvd's, correct? Just set WMP back as the default audio player.

thanks jack will go for the resetting the wmp being default audio....showing my uncertainess here, but how do i actually do that, currently i have removed the vlc player

can be hardware and/or software dvd player region change counts...

1116419 2010-07-06 06:22:00 - Since you removed VLC first check if WMP is now the default audio player again
- If not you can either set it in WMP's options, or by right click>properties of each audio file type you
play and setting the default application
- Install VLC again and take note during the process as it gives you the option to select what file types it
is the default player for, just uncheck 'audio'

1116420 2010-07-06 06:26:00 thanx bevy121, jackM and speedy...will follow up on this in an hour or so when back from picking up my fiancee from work...appreciate your help.... will post more later...cheers hoanikai (13138)
1116421 2010-07-06 06:51:00 VLC can play DVDs from any region. I'm not sure how it works. Greven (91)
1116422 2010-07-06 07:02:00 The region code is in the DVD drives firmware read Highlighted area (www.imagef1.net.nz) - If its locked, there is ways to unlock it, one is to locate some Third Party (http://files.rpc1.org/) firmware and blow the original for your make and model of drive -- The problem being if it goes all pear shaped, your drives stuffed. wainuitech (129)
1116423 2010-07-06 23:52:00 thanx everyone....have reloaded vlc and corrected the default settings for audio to come through wmp, and video to default to vlc...all good...tho' i prefer the powerdvd user friendliness over the vlc, and may eventually buy the region free software i have been avoiding so far...thankyou once again everyone for your help.... hoanikai (13138)
1116424 2010-07-07 04:21:00 If you would rather use PowerDVD, did you try DVD Genie to reset the "user change region count" as I suggested in post #10 ?

I don't know if it works as they say it does, haven't used it myself, but from what I've read it does...

Speedy and WT...

the dvd lock can also be in the software - in this case possibly/probably his PowerDVD software.

look at the Cyberlink knowledge base (for PowerDVD software)

How many times can I change the region code?

The limitation is set in accordance with the requirements specified by major film studios. PowerDVD will allow you to change region codes up to 5 times (also depending on your DVD drive) and then automatically lock in the fifth region-code setting.

Afterwards, you can only play DVD titles in the fifth region code or non-CSS DVD titles of all regions. The region code will remain locked even if you re-install PowerDVD.

* CSS: This acronym refers to Content Scrambling System

..... DVD Genie will reset it back to 5 for PowerDVD
