827430 2009-11-05 20:12:00 Windows, cos they are universal and have lots of software, but I have never looked at Linux, but it has no future as it has a lower user base even tho its free and has been available for years.

Tui billboard right there Digby! :waughh:

827431 2009-11-05 20:37:00 "Prefer" for what purpose? I use different OSes for various things (one size doesn't fit all) - sometimes Windows is the preferable choice, sometimes its Linux.

I feel the same way...I do prefer Windows for normal usage, since I am most familiar with it, but for a cheap fileserver you just can't beat Linux:D

Digby: Why do you say linux has no future?

IIRC around 15% of the worlds web servers are running linux, and its growing at quite a rapid rate too..

Linux may not be the best for the consumer, but it certainly has many applications(not just as a desktop PC!!)

827432 2009-11-05 21:21:00 I've always liked Windows, but have a dual-boot with Kubuntu on both my laptop and desktop.

I'm trying to use Linux more and more but for some reason the internet is unbearably slow in Linux :(

827433 2009-11-05 21:59:00 I use Windows XP Home because it runs most of the games and applications that I use frequently. convair (13650)

827435 2009-11-06 02:55:00 Windows for me, there's many programs on it I can't live without. (I refuse to give up Office :D) pcuser42 (130)
827436 2009-11-06 04:26:00 Mac OSX because it has superior music and video editing software.

Had a box running Ubuntu and loved it, hope to get back there to play around with it again some day-- time constraints mean that is a luxury I cannot afford at the moment.

And a note that there are an increasing amount of games available for the Mac, sometimes you need to source them from overseas.

New games aren't often of interest to me. ;)

827438 2009-11-06 04:32:00 I liked XP a lot but even when I had all that trouble with Ubuntu, I was still intrigued with what "L" might be able to do for me .

Well now - I am running PCLOS right now and I like it - but one extenuating thing is that I am not a gamer so I don't think I'll miss much except some things that run Windows exclusively .

Open Office has always been my word processor of choice so I don't even factor in Windows Office at all . AbiWord is also another possibility to run - and I used it a while but just slowly migrated back to OO even though I found nothing wrong with AbiWord at all .

If I can find out how to run WINE - and after I get it un-tarballed - then I may not sign on with XP much more .

At the mo I have 4 puters with a mixture of XP versions and a few distros of PCLOS - er, make that different vintages as I am not too sure how to update .

It is faster than XP and with no real security updates constantly dumping on me, I find PCLOS refreshing and somehow a lot less overhead-eating .

I am noticing a few pop-ups in it though that I never noticed in XP - and I think AVG was keeping them out of the NT-side of my puters .

XP takes minutes to load - PCLOS takes moments .

I run boot races on two neighboring puters and the one with XP is my hotrod unit with the faster CPU and lots of RAM and yet PCLOS on an old Dell 450 beats it every way to Sunday . I think it's the security stuff XP has to have and cannot do without that bogs it down .

Wait till after December when I build a new puter with SATA and I can get some real test times run .

Apples, MACs and anything with the lower-case "i" in it are not even on my horizon .

OK - I use iGoogle - but that's all! I swear!

827439 2009-11-06 04:33:00 I would say linux but it has to be windows just because its easier straight out of the box, supports leading games and windows 7 kicks a**. If linux picked up game support id be there permanently in a second hueybot3000 (3646)
