She must be a patient woman to put up with you filing in her mouth - the Dragon went sad on the manual dentistry years ago. Wimp that she is. Actually, downright savage might be more accurate than "sad". R2x1 (4628)
826971 2009-11-04 06:56:00 If you are prepared to shop overseas I would recommend going to www.micromark.com. Micromark specialize in small precision tools aimed at the craftsman and scale modellers market. I have dealt with them for a number of years and found them very satisfactory. If you can wait until they are having a sale their prices are legendary. tutaenui (1724)
826972 2010-11-09 01:56:00 I eventually found a drill press which is apparently just for PCBs at www.electroflash.co.nz - and not too bad a price, I thought.

Sent an order off to them for one. Waited a week or so, nothing, not even an email from them.

Rang them up, asked if they had received my order. Response was something like: "Oh, our ordering system doesn't work on the website since the upgrade, we probably didn't get your email"

I asked to order one over the phone right then, and they told me they were out of stock, and I should ring back next Tuesday.

I did that, and they said they still had none.

Called a couple more times, and eventually they told me that they were a custom job from China, and there was a 3-month wait time on the next shipment.

Since I was not really in a hurry I waited and called up 3 months later, asking if they had any, they told me that they had about 25 of them but they were all allocated to orders (I thought one of those orders would have been mine :annoyed:)

They said they'd ring me when they had some more, they never did. I eventually decided they were psychotic clowns, and started looking on the Internet again.

Thought about getting the Dremel, and the Dremel drill stand but after reading some reviews about it, I found out that the drill stand was horribly inaccurate with far too much play and (as quoted from the Dremel sales team) "Really only designed for arts and crafts"

Found some mini drill presses much the same as those sold by Electroflash on eBay, but due to the weight shipping was far too high. I also read reviews that they were pretty cheap and crappy in any case.

I then thought about making my own drill press for a cheap hand-held drill, There are a few designs on www.instructables.com but all of them required tools and materials I didn't have or were simply not sensible (eg: the door-hinge idea which means the drill moves in an arc, not really good if you want to NOT break your bits)

Eventually after much time spend searching I came back around to Proxxon, which I had discounted originally since the prices were insane (from the NZ distributors)

A couple of videos on Youtube of the Proxxon tool and press pretty much had me convinced that this was the tool I wanted.

So the challenge then was to find a seller who didn't want several of my body parts...

I searched for a couple of weeks and eventually I bought the Proxxon FBS 240/E Tool from SG Tooling in Singapore, and the Proxxon MB 140/S from Hardware Sales Inc. in the USA.

Final verdict?

The Proxxon tools are GREAT. The press is precise, and the drill goes through FR4 at 20K RPM cleanly and quickly. I am very happy with it. I certainly recommend them to anyone else who may want something for drilling PCBs. The videos on Youtube say it all, really.

As for Electroflash, I have no idea what those clowns were on but I'm glad they never did sell me that drill press. I have a strong feeling the Proxxon tools are much, much better.
