2010-07-05 23:33:00 | Hi guys, I've got a bit of a weird problem with my internet connection. In terms of speed, it works fine - I connect at 3MBit and it is rare for download speeds to noticeably drop, even at peak times. However, probably around 20 times per day the connection seems to lag for several minutes. All of the pages being loaded sort of hang for a few minutes, not loading, but also not displaying the could not connect to server/not connected to internet dialogue. Then a few minutes later upon refresh everything loads fine again. It isn't the connection that is dropping because I have checked the connection time on the modem after it happens. It also doesn't appear to be the network because even when pages are lagging, you can still always load the modem admin page. Additionally, I have tried a different wireless base station and it still happens. I called up Telecom and talked to tech support. Although my modem is old, the person on the other end of the line did not think it needed to be replaced since it was not actually disconnecting and, having checked there were no known issues in my area, could only suggest a fault in my Airport Extreme (which as I mentioned about does not seem to be the issue). So now I am a bit stuck. It keeps happening, but does not seem to be caused by any of my gear (I should also add that this happens on multiple computers connected to the network simultaneously) and Telecom doesn't seem to think there is anything wrong with the internet connection. Any suggestions as to what may be causing this to happen? I'm hoping someone else might have experienced this because I'm somewhat out of ideas.

2010-07-06 01:59:00 | Does it happen when you have the internet connected vIa ethernet cable? Yes, I have an iMac connected via ethernet and that exhibits the same problems as the wireless devices. Can I ask what modem / router setup your using ?? D-Link 302G as a modem and Apple Airport Extreme for the wireless network (along with an Airport Express for audio and to extend the network).

If they're bulging or leaking it can cause the problem you're describing. I've just given up on D-Link and trying out a Linksys at the moment, but had similar problems to you. Worth a look just to eliminate it as a cause. |

2010-08-05 09:50:00 | I didn't end up taking the D-Link apart so I'm not sure about those capacitors SP8's. After replacing the modem and swapping the line filters, I gave Telecom another call and eventually they had someone alter the "noise profile" of my connection at the exchange. This appears to have fixed the problem (bar an hour or so earlier tonight when the connection went spastic again). Whether this fixes the problem long term or not I'm not sure, but at least I now know it is a problem outside the house. | maccrazy (6741) | |
2010-08-06 23:00:00 | Personally, I'd replace the 302G asap. I know it was a relief to bin mine several years ago. Also, it is not ADSL2+ capable - another reason to upgrade.
