1115828 2010-07-05 00:21:00 Need some foolproof instructions on sharing a printer please on a network,, something a senile bugger like me can follow.

My efforts so far have been frustratingly unsuccessful, won"t bore you with the details as I want to start again from scratch

Desktop comp runs XP3 (with sp3) connected to Thomson router/modem by ethernnet cable. Printer is connected to this computer via usual usb cable

Laptop comp upstairs runs Windows 7 Home premium and is wireless connected to the Thomson r/m

Have downloaded and installed approprate printer driver for W7

AND I do know the desktop unit must be running if I want to print from the laptop

Now all I need are some simple and foolproof instructions please!!

1115830 2010-07-05 00:35:00 What you might want to do is setup a reserved IP address for the XP desktop pc in the thomson router if you can and add the IP address in your Hosts file on windows 7, so it can resolve the xp desktop ip address.
I have found that on many occasions, the laptop will fail to resolve a new ip address handed out to the desktop pc. Reserve IP address and an entry in the hosts file will fix this!

Sol,
sounds useful too but I ashamed to say that unfortunately it's too technical for me to understand, sorry

1115832 2010-07-05 00:59:00 When your PC talks to the internet\router, it gets an IP address (think of it as a phone number). This address allows communication between all devices. This address comes from your router (DHCP), and the address comes from a range and lasts for a period set by you. Unless the address is static, it will periodically change depending on what device (PC or laptop) connects 1st, so to keep the same address for the desktop, we can reserve the current address, that way when the laptop goes to use the printer on the desktop, the address is always the same, if not the laptop may not be able to resolve the ip address for the desktop and therefore fail to print.
You router guide will advise you how to set reserved IP addresses

Why noy just get a router with a print server on it? Then it doesn't matter about the desktop PC at all.

I did have a wireless router with USB print server, not uncommon and way easier.

No, however the pc its connected to does and if the router DHCP hands out a new IP, the \\pcname\sharedprinter wont work, and most of the time DNS for local hostnames doesnt work, hence the host file entry.

1115836 2010-07-05 03:46:00 Umm well no thats not true either .

You dont need an ip address . Actually the router has nothing to do with it .

If its a USB printer, go to printers then share it on the PC its on . On the networked PC's add a printer, go to the network option . find the shared printer, then select it (if it asks for drivers, add them) thats it .

Thats what I've done here (with XP, Vista, Win7) . Never had a prob printing to the PC, thats got the printer on it . I've never had to muck around with ips . The only thing I've done is given each PC an ip address (instead of leaving them on automatic) . I dont have to use ips to log into the other PC's to see the shared folder/s / or to copy to the other PC's folders, or to print
