828853 2009-11-10 18:58:00 Had a bit of a fright Monday. Went to town to get padlocks for work, drove back to work, over an intersection when "BLAM" a Commodore hit me on my side of the car (traffic lights intersection). My car died immediately, but we got both cars to the side of the road and I got out to exchange details. "No, the Police are on their way". "Why, nobody's hurt". "Oh our car is a cop car". Turned out to be two detectives in an unmarked cop car.

So the Officer arrived, took down statements - mine was very short, as I could not remember a thing but one witness also stopped and gave his statement. The next day they ran an ad in the paper for more witnesses (probably becuase the two cops said I ran the red and the witness disagreed). Got four more witnesses. Got a call from Officer yesterday - all the witnesses said I had green. $2000 damage to my car, don't know about theirs.

Damage to me - not really, just blood and cuts (no broken glass though). My friend at ED, when he checked me out for brain damage said "if you shake empty space (like my avatar) you can't do any harm to it" (the b*st*rd) so except for a bit of swelling all OK. Still can't remember a thing.

Funny thing though - my insurance immediately thought I was guilty ("only guilty people forget") but has since waived my excess because I did not cause the accident.

I must say that the cops - detectives and the officer - all were very professional and supportive.

One question - I want to get a copy of the accident report - will I be able to ask for it?

828856 2009-11-10 19:15:00 So did they say why the cops ran a red?
Did they have their lights & siren on?

828858 2009-11-10 19:29:00 No siren, no lights. Nobody knew it was a cop car until after.

828860 2009-11-10 20:14:00 you where so lucky. what are the odds there was actually witnesses and ones that couldn't be persuaded. tweak'e (69)
828861 2009-11-10 20:29:00 Just as well it WAS a Police car. At least you know they will have insurance. In the end it will be their insurance cover that pays out, even though they probably carry their own cover. Just make sure that your 'No claims bonus' remains intact. Glad that there was no serious hurt. :) Richard (739)
828862 2009-11-10 20:31:00 It's good to hear you are not injured Sarel :) Usually the car with the dent in the driver's side is at fault for not giving way to the right, but in this case it was a controlled intersection so red should give way to green ... it wouldn't have mattered if you accidently caused the smash, insurers would still pay, but you wouldn't get your excess back.

Looks like all's well that ends, ummm, well I guess :P
