2009-11-09 23:40:00 | Thinking about traveling up to Nelson that way, as I've never been through there before - is there reasonable accommodation and a few watering holes? It'll only be for one night. And how long (roughly) will it take to Murchison from the turn off just south of Waipara?

2009-11-09 23:43:00 | I was there a few weekends ago (well going through it). Murch has always been a pretty average place. :p It's an enjoyable drive, road isn't the greatest over the Lewis Pass but there's some great scenery. Last year I was going down to Chch about once a month, got the trip from mot to Chch down to a constant 3 hours 50 mins, normally leaving Mot at about 8PM to avoid the traffic. There's a few places to stay, mostly B&B type setups. Old school pub, there is beer there but that's about it. It would be about 2.5 - 3 hours from the SH7 turnoff south of Waipara to Murch, depending on how you drive. http://www.murchisonlodge.co.nz/ That looks nice - the BBQ breakfast is what would make me stay there. :drool Pricing isn't too bad, $150 double with breakfast and internet access.

Or is it the old 6 of 1, half doz. of the other scenario? :p |

2009-11-10 00:02:00 | It's much quicker going over the Lewis and through Murch if you're heading to Nelson or Golden Bay. I'd say an hour easily, maybe more. | wratterus (105) | |
2009-11-10 00:41:00 | Hi nofam. Forget the time of the run. If this is your one oppoortunity to run this way take the inland route and enjoy the views, scenery, mountains, less traffic and all that sort of stuff. I run down from the Nelson area to Christchurch regularly and generally take the inland route. Had to go the coastal (Blenheim - Kaikoura) way a few months ago when the snow was too deep south of Murchison, but managed to come back up that way.... magnificent. I'm no speed freak and take over 6 hours to do the 420 km trip - with two or three brew stops and an occasional brief walk on the way. | Scouse (83) | |
2009-11-10 01:22:00 | Thanks Scouse - don't really have to go either way, but Kaikoura is rather overpriced for a one-night stay, and it's an opportunity to see another part of the country I've never seen before. Can you recommend a few places to get a good coffee between Chch and Murchison? :p

2009-11-10 01:28:00 | Culverden Tea Rooms is good, and there is a cafe on the southern entrance to Murch that does very nice coffees. Have you been to Hanmer before? If you've got a few hours to spare that's nice, go for a dip in the hot pools. | wratterus (105) | |

2009-11-10 02:06:00 | Yea it is, it would be mint if you could be there after or during a decent snowfall - nothing like being outdoors in hot pools in the snow. :D :punk | wratterus (105) | |
