| 829079 | 2009-11-13 04:54:00 | Yeah the funny thing about music/movies etc is that even though you most likely have the source media (dvd's/cd's), and it's technically replaceable, you still spend a heap of time ripping it, converting it, cleaning up the metadata etc so it's a pain in the arse to replace. Ah, I don't care for movies and music in that sense. I lost family videos, and pictures, which hurts most because they were pretty much the last memories of my late brother. Everything else can be replaced with time and money but not that. I still have the both the drives from the RAID and maybe sometime soon I will be able to take to to some pros to get some recovery. While I was able to recover a lot from the non raid drive, I could not recover everything. This makes me weary of storing on hard/flash/cd/dvds they could die on you at any moment and you'll be left with bugger all. |

| 829080 | 2009-11-13 05:50:00 | Well that's just the thing, There isn't really anything you can trust 50% of the time you will get a warning via SMART or otherwise before a HDD breaks, but the rest of the time it can just fail without warning. SSDs\flash drives being solid state won't make funny noises etc unless it's the sound of the silicon going up in smoke And CD/DVD will all rot eventually. The only thing you can do is have multiple copies and backups of everything and refresh the media periodically to ensure you finish with it before it goes bad. Tapes are probably pretty good if they are kept in a good environment but you have to watch out for faulty drives that might like to destroy them... |
