828988 2009-11-11 16:05:00 I think it's an awesome promotion . I luuuurve Cadburys (apart from the fact that they're some weird religious family - Quackers I think, or so I've heard)

Quackers are ducks - QUAKERS however are a religious group .

There are a lot of those fundamentalist religious groups in the US that had cottage industries and branched out to produce some of the finest products .

I speak from experience here as we lived in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and we always bought all our dairy products from groups like the Amish (Amana appliances) and the Yoders (milk, cheese) and Mennonites (woolens and knitted goods) etc .

One of the outlets that most of these fundamentalist groups used - collectively - was called "Great Eastern Mills" to display, warehouse and market their goods thus saving shipping and delivery costs - making the consumer come to the store, not the other way around .

I believe that Sam Walton (Wal-Mart) used this sales technique as the model for his vastly successful chain of stores too .

What was refreshing was that their quality was extremely high and their attitude was very much concerned with providing first-class customer happiness and 100% satisfaction with their products .

In the burgeoning days of newfangled gasoline and diesel powered delivery vehicles (yes, the US was quite rural too - especially out in the sticks and hollers in the Ozarks) - they delivered their goods by horse and wagon - eschewing modern transportation and internal combustion .

If you've ever had an Amana* or any other microwave for instance, it was the Amish that brought them to general public approval since they perfected the sealing to keep the microwaves INSIDE the box and not cooking you and your family .

The Amana Corporation was founded by George Foerstner as Amana Refrigeration in 1934 in Middle Amana, Iowa to manufacture commercial walk-in coolers . The business was owned by the Amana Society . In 1947, it manufactured the first upright freezer for the home, and in 1949 added a side-by-side refrigerator/freezer . In 1950, the company was sold to a group of investors including its founder, and became Amana Refrigeration, Inc . In 1954, it began making air conditioners . Amana was acquired in 1965 by Raytheon, which had invented the microwave oven in 1947, and introduced the commercial Radarange model 1611 in 1954 . In 1967 Amana introduced a consumer model of the Radarange, the first popular microwave designed for home use . Amana has since expanded into manufacturing a variety of other appliances including furnaces, ovens, countertop ranges, dishwashers, and clothes washers and dryers . In 1997 the company was purchased by Goodman, a heating-and-cooling manufacturer . The Amana brand name is now owned by the Whirlpool Corporation .

Another group "The Pennsylvania 'Dutch'" ( . pavacationrental . com/Pennsylvania-Sight-Seeing-Pennsylvania-Dutch . htm" target="_blank">www . pavacationrental . com) are not really Dutch, but a transmogrification of the word "Deutsche" which doesn't roll off American lips well at all . There might have been some political backlash about the Germanic-sounding name during either WW1 or WW2 and it was allowed to morph into "Dutch" to eliminate any cross-alliances which didn't exist anyway .

I hope this helps with some odd/wrong concepts of these people . Most are pacifists and totally refuse to take up arms against nations in war or political intrigues .

There are misunderstandings about these people even on their own turf, here in the US . Hopefully you NZers appreciate the research and material I collected to make this little presentation for youse guys .

828993 2009-11-12 17:57:00 The real shame to me is that we are now importing container loads of chocolate from Australia. How can this be when their wages are much higher than here ? And we are supposed the be the most efficient milk producer in the world.

This is a drain on our overseas funds, and coupled with the demise of Irwin's Saw Blades factory in Wellsford is bad news for the economy as they exported 90% of their blades to the USA, now we are going to import all of them from China !

828994 2009-11-12 18:22:00 Too late, all the free chocolate in the world won't tempt me to go back to Cadburys or any other chocolate.

I posted here 3 months ago how their latest recipe changes and other shenanigans were the final straw that inspired me to quit cold turkey after a lifelong chocolate habit.

I'm glad to say I've not eaten any since and hope I won't ever again.

Thanks again Cadburys:thanks
