The nylon cord would not pull out at all so I took the head apart and found this: See attached jpeg below.

With the overlapping nylon cord, there is no way it could be released. It took me awhile with a screwdriver to pry the cord apart. I cannot see that it would ever be totally free so no wonder "Lil Juey" was invented.

I too have a couple of weed eaters. although they are Husqvarna units. Gasoline goes bad just like milk and bread and can make a mess out of the diaphragm in the carbs. It's not that old gas harms the parts - it just gums them up and you need to disassemble the Walbro or Tillotson units to get them freed-up again so they will pump fuel with the crankcase pressure cycles.

I used some gasoline additives to keep gas fresh - but even the label on the stabilizer said to only store the gas for less than 3 months or it will drop precious chemicals out of suspension and be rendered varnish.

Maybe youse guys don't get methanol in your vehicle fuels - but we do and it's nasty too when it goes sour.

I looked at your pix and I get that too when I let the engine rev too high. The nylon string welds itself together if it gets hot or the centrifugal forces create heat in the unused spool.

Keep the RPMs down and it won't do that as much I find. The Husky spools run just fine if you don't go crazy and try to get to 25,000 RPM.

This is one of the Husky 125 cc power heads: (jpeg below)

Not allowed. Evidently, there's enough old goats in the region.

827863 2009-11-07 09:09:00 When I bought my Stihl weedeater, the agent told me that 2 stroke mix goes stale, and you should biff it - I think he said after a couple of weeks. He recommended not even leaving any in the tank - putting in just enough so the tank runs dry at the end of the job if possible.

I asked him what I should do with unused stale 2 stroke fuel (ie a decent alternative to the storm water drain), and he said to stick it in my car - it will get so diluted in a car tank it won't do any harm there. So that is what I have done, with both a hedge trimmer and the Stihl weedeater. No probs with the car that I am aware of.

 Thanks John. There is only a small amount of fuel remaining in the weedeater and as you say, it will be very diluted in the car's petrol tank.

Thanks also to SJ, regarding 'gumming up parts', etc. BTW, the nylon cord did not weld together.

827865 2009-11-07 20:03:00 Alternative solutions -
a. Get an electric weed eater.
b. Give the Dragon a pair of scissors and set 'er to work.
c. (Safest and cheapest.) Let the mowing contractor do it.

You've referred to cords, better bump heads have segregated spools for each line. When all the line is wound on one spool it's easy to jam.

I tried the "Lil Juey" and found it a waste of time unless you were trimming short grass. In longer grass the lines and the grass would usually tangle quite quickly. I put that down to the clamping points for the line being close together (imagine the line bent down like a hairpin). The extra weight of a commercial bump head makes my trimmer run smoother as well.

Good info - thanks. Where are these "segregated spool bump heads" available?

Thanks also for the Lil Juey comment - I need to cut more than short grass!

827868 2009-11-08 19:54:00 Meh, I keep my 2-stoke for months, I store it in the weed-eater, Fires up just fine.

Best thing you can do is buy one of those replacement heads linked earlier, You can use whatever sized line you like, including heavier stuff then what you would use if you had to spn an entire spool of it.

Personally found double-spool heads just as troublesome as single spool heads. If not more so, It just gives 2 lots of line to get tangled and refuse to come out while you smash the damn thing into the ground swearing at it.
