829747 2010-03-04 19:25:00 Then why would the lane markings around islands in Upper Hutt, and also those in Lower Hutt, particularly the one near to Melling, be changed so many times, if not to maximise work for the panel beaters ?

The Melling one use to be OK, but there were not enough accidents, so they changed the markings so that vehicles wanting the right hand lane out of the island have to change lanes immediately after having just turned left.

Whereas previously there were two lanes going into the island for turning left......it needs a diagram to illustrate the point.

It is difficult to see how so-called road engineers could be so thick otherwise.

Perhaps, there are sinecure road layout jobs at LTSA for panel beaters nearing retirement age ?

If you put it that way,you may have something, the old saying comes in to play here, none so blind as those that cannot see.

829750 2010-03-05 06:12:00 We've got a roundabout here where the arrows have been painted at a slight right hand offset on the left hand entry point. On another entry point to the the right, the right hand lane has the arrow showing you can turn right at the roundabout & go straight on. The result is, you now have traffic in the left lane turning right & the right lane turning left. It's another that need a diagram to show it in it's full glory Phil B (648)

829752 2010-03-05 12:06:00 For bad traffic engineering the Gillies Avenue Auckland motorway access and exits have to take the cake - where else in the world would they be so stupid as to deliberatesly build a traffic hazard on a motorway with the exit after the access, so that exiting traffic trying to slow down and get off the motorway has to pass through traffic accelerating as it enters the motorway. Yep. That's the one.
Another good one is the lane filtering abortion they've painstakingly designed & installed at the Paknsave junction at the top of universal drive

Point taken, I have to use that intersection a couple of times a week

I go through that one at least once a day, have for 25 years. Still havent sussed out the correct lanes to use. It was a struggle in the old days driving a 6 wheeler Commer around it with no power steering.

829756 2010-03-05 19:59:00 It makes me laugh when they refuse to filter & go side by side right down to the island in the middle of the road. They gesture & even talk to each other, they must be good friends & then whoever has the newest car gives way lol Phil B (648)
