830104 2009-11-15 08:20:00 Interesting, that article looks like it's been cheaply written by somebody who's just read a whole lot of other articles or twitter tweets and not really given it much thought.

Knowing what we know, that it's Linux-based, that's how they're going to claim "Virus Free". They're not claiming vulnerability free, because let's face it that's not gonna happen, but viruses like Windows users are used to just simply don't seem to affect Linux systems, even though hypothetically it's all possible to a certain degree.

We know it's going to have Gears, so you're going to have, or at least want a HDD in your device, even if it's just a tiny SSD like the 4GB one in the EeePC 701, so that your docs have somewhere to be cached locally etc, mail too. The whole thing is browser-based and presuming we're going to want to cache a certain good amount of your browsing history, so you'll need a HDD for that.

Might it only run applications that Google hosts? What a retarded question, it's an OS based around a web-browser .. you're free to browse anywhere and most likely install anything else for that matter that you want :p

Anyways, I'm keen for the OS, but mostly just as a novelty, or for it's very limited application in the real-world, and time will tell what it's going to be like.

I still dislike crappy journalists who simply write to meet their word-count. Remember they most likely get paid by the word, so hear-say is prime, even if it's crap hear-say and speculation with no thought put into it.

830105 2009-11-15 08:58:00 That link I posted re google doc's was one of many that reported the same event, badly written or not, it still proves a point that nothing is 100% safe, and while google wasn't hacked directly as soon as you add in a human factor security will drop - only takes one person to do something they shouldn't.

It will be interesting in a "real World" usage, as if it can only use web based applications then right away I can see a huge downfall.

Time will tell once it comes out - no doubt many will download it, look - some will like it, others will simply dump it.

Some of the "average home users" have enough problems working programs on the current PC with apps installed, some people have problems simply working a browser in its basic form, trying to use apps on line, -- well take a guess :p

Tui?

830107 2009-11-15 09:37:00 What would be even "neater" is if any software developer got a product right that every one liked first time -- it will never happen in our life time :D wainuitech (129)

I should hope not!

What a nauseating prospect.

Although the Dragon is not a product, she fits the requirements, and the prospect continues to be appetising. Pity she was only a one-off prototype ;)

Pretty much impossible, though you could probably class Google Search and iPod in the 'almost' category. :P

Not the Ipod.

Now, if it wasn't proprietary software (Itunes) then possibly.

Can't argue with a 73.8% (Sep 2009, though falling) market share though.

Yes you can :-) Haven't you argued against Microsoft before? ;)
