829717 2010-03-03 02:02:00 I've been thinking (how unusual, Mrs T would say) and I don't think that the current daft give-way rules have been in force since 1977 at all, I'm pretty sure that they are much more recent than that. In fact, I doubt that they are any older than the mid to late 1990's though there may have been minor changes earlier than that.

The main reason I think this is because I've been in my current house since the mid 1980s and I have to make a left turn off a main road to get into my local streets. I recall vividly my frustration following the introduction of the new give way to right turning traffic rule as my turn was at the bottom of a dip and I could see traffic barrelling down in both directions that would make it unsafe to turn but some idiots thought that the new rule would part the waters and let them waft through without getting hit. Some made it, some didn't.

Similarly, turning right on exit from the side road became very hazardous as traffic coming from my left would roar down at speed and turn right across in front of me instead of giving way to let me turn out. This was not helped by clots that gave way when they wanted to turn left when it was patently impossible for the car turning right into the side street to go because they could (usually) see that there was a stream of traffic pouring down the other way that would wipe them out if they tried. Sooner changed the better, and I'd be interested to know if anybody can accurately date the change.

Back in the 70's, I think Oz had a strange rule in some States that required traffic on a main road to give way to vehicles turning left out of side streets. I remember standing at the top of a long downhill road and watching the stop-start flow as the side traffic entered at will. That was worse than our current give way rules.

Typical Aussie one-upmanship......

Cheers

The current rules have been in place since at least 92, which is when I got my license. Going to be difficult to break the habit of already knowing the rules. Perhaps they are going to require everyone to rego for their license again... a good way for them to make money/tax us more.

829719 2010-03-03 02:38:00 I have never had a problem with the give way rule, pretty simple if the opposing clown at an intersection is going to hit the driver door when turning you give way to him.
If it aint broke dont fix it.

I wonder why it took them so long to change?

829721 2010-03-03 02:43:00 AFAIK, because there's a yellow car behind blue, then blue had the right of way due to the fact the yellow car could pass at any time on the right, and end in the scenario depicted in Image 2 in the original post.

However, in the instance that the yellow vehicle is also turning left, then blue goes first, and all cars *except* the last one (In this case just yellow) which then gives way to Red.

Also, the 3rd (recent) image that wratterus posted, T-Intersection, if the car coming from the right (Coz it changes color, retarded) turning right is at a Give Way or Stop, then it gives way to the car thats on the left, turning right.

+1 yea I agree, cant see how the new proposal fixes anything, just cause Australia has it wrong.....

Careful Billy, blanking out a decade or two is a sign of something :D

It seems to have been the Traffic Regulations 1976 taking effect 1 Feb 1977 .

What a bunch of twats.

This is going to cause nothing but problems. We have been living with whatever we have had for god knows how long, and we are fine. This will only cause chaos and confusion. Twats.

IMO it should have been changed years ago - late is better than never, but only just.

829726 2010-03-03 03:34:00 But why change something that works properly?

I have been driving for nearly a decade, and I yet to encounter any problems . I am sure there are people here who have driven for 5+ decades, do they have problems with this?

Why change it now and cause problems?

Driving is very instinctual, it's beyond second nature, and when you try to change something as fundamental as this, you will only have problems .
