| 830086 | 2009-11-15 01:16:00 | Yeah ... why bundle Openoffice with it when the idea is that everything is done from the browser, specifically using GDocs etc? One of the big problems with using online doc's or every thing Via a browser to items stored off site - what happens when the internet goes down - nothing works. Take an example - a business - lets say 10 people, all using online apps, nothing on the PC, the internet goes down for an hour or more - no work - yet the people will still need to be paid for doing nothing. Now x that by 100 or more people -- Are the ISP's going to pay for lost time -- doubt it. I had that the other week, the internet was down for about 1 1/2 hours - no email or web sites, yet I could still carry on because all my "stuff" is stored locally. |

They essentially become programs and I have no worries with backing up or anything of the such I don't use Office anymore, Google Docs and Gmail do everything that I need for free . I don't really need the advanced features and saving to PDF is just as good, if not better than exporting as word documents . It also means I can move between computers with relatively little speed difference or compatibility issues Once I find an invite to google wave (:clap) I think that I'll be pretty set to move into the cloud . |

| 830089 | 2009-11-15 03:36:00 | So people are going to rely on google for everything ? Funny that seems to be the exact same as relying on MS for everything which so many complain about. Basically the same but a different name. Using gears is OK, but what happens when an important document is needed and its not saved someplace else, and the internet is down -- no thanks. But we can wait and see just what google comes up with. |

It's not like anyone had much of a choice back then- When Microsoft became the dominant player it wasn't like there was any other vaiable competitor (Apple was in the crap, NeXT was great but dysfunctional, Linux was only for geeks and OS/2 was developed by Microsoft anyway). Once NT came out, it was all over. Gears syncs all of your documents.. changes are updated on the net when you go back online, they are always the same, pretty much the same as using Offline Files to sync a network drive.. so it will be saved on whichever computers you install offline mode onto. |

| 830093 | 2009-11-15 04:26:00 | Well my faith in google has just gone down the dunny. When in Australia last week, my wife was was writing a diary of our trip, she was using google Doc's, as some people at her work do as well. When she had finished each night, I copied it to wordpad, and uploaded it to Microsoft's skydrive as a second backup. Yesterday she tried to log in to google doc's, wouldn't accept her user name and password - tried sending a password reminder, You may need to wait up to 24 hours to receive our email. If you did not receive an email after waiting for 24 hours, please submit another request. still nothing. I logged into MS Skydrive and downloaded the copy. Google 0 - MS 1. soif it locks you out you're stuffed. ( as in this case it has) I just thought I'd make an account at Google docs myself, it asks for a cell number to Verify your account Example (www.imagef1.net.nz)- that was 15 minutes ago - still nothing. :groan: |
