1117783 2010-07-13 01:14:00 I suggest you email a trusted retailer telling them your budget and you want it for gaming. This is just one retailer I would suggest.

Holy banana fruitcake.

Their prices are insane.

e.g.

www.computerlounge.co.nz

I got the gigabyte version $825 direct from dealer. (incl GST + postage)

They mustn't make money off of these.

Wow.. I'm glad I never went ahead and did a buy now.
I'll stay away from trade me in the future.

I'll give the people on that site an e-mail. I'm glad I came here before making any rash decisions! Thanks alot!

If you have 3 watches that all say 3pm, that doesn't make it 9pm ;)

1117786 2010-07-13 02:08:00 Just post on their forums, that way you can have some input from other users too. They get new "need a new pc for under $1k" threads every day, so they know how to build to a budget.

But yes, pc's on trademe are ****. I hate to say it, but they are put together from the most random assortments of parts imaginable, by the most dodgy asian dealers around. Sorry, but they are. Biggest source of engrish on trademe is from their computer hardware auctions, and they quite often don't know what the hell they're talking about. (Or they know enough to mask what they're really selling.)
Their AMD builds, for example, will either have a great GPU to mask their shoddy athlon II cpu's, or their Intel builds will have a great CPU to mask their crappy GPU.
They don't even specify what motherboard or case they'll use sometimes. They say "asus or gigabyte" in many of them, implying that they'll give you the cheapest of either brand that they have lying around.
Their power supplies are cheap, often bundled with the case, and scarily enough they are often UNDER REQUIRED WATTAGE for the components they power, or they list the PEAK wattage instead.

And yes, like others have said, they always, ALWAYS give you "a free 30 day trial of windows 7, with key available at extra cost"
They don't even give you the god damn disc, because that means they'd have to spend extra money.

Anyway, hit up a computer store like playtech or computer lounge as others have suggested, take a look at the parts and do some research of your own.

For gaming, you'll need a decent CPU, i recommend quad core or higher the way things are going, 4gb of ram is STANDARD, combine it with a DECENT powersupply (ie thermaltake, corsair, some coolermaster, etc. Avoid hyena like the plague...) and then go all out on the GPU, which as we say, is where all your gaming performance will come from. Well, most of it anyway.
If you're trying to stick to a serious budget, go for a 5770 at a minimum, or 5830/50 if you can spring for it, or if you can wait for it, also have a look at nvidia's gtx460, which comes out in a little while. Computerlounge will have more info on it if you ask on their forums.

And don't forget to have it powering a nice HD monitor, and factor in the cost of an OS.
If you can build it yourself aswell, that'll save you some cash, but if you've never tinkered before, then leave it to the pros. If you ask em, they might even let you go in and build it supervised by a spare staff member, although they still might charge a little bit for that. It's easy enough, but can be daunting for a first timer.
