830878 2009-11-18 02:20:00 The bits about aircraft snapping in half was definitely the highlight so far..... Metla (12)
830879 2009-11-18 18:23:00 And so you should be. The new 'composite' (ie carbon fibre) materials used on aircraft are difficult to assess for cracks / damage. Cases like the entire rudder / tial area shearing off are kinda characteristic of composites. They used to test for faults, delamination by tapping and listening to the sound off these parts... but the composites don't reveal their faults this way.... so how do you know if that hefty use of rudder approaching Wellington has stressed the tail? How do you know if the lightening strike has or hasn't weakened the structure?

Frankly, I'm happy to stict with the older, metal planes for the meantime.
Very true as far as the "testing by tapping" goes. However, the fault lies, not with the composites, but with the treasury. The standard "tapper" was a 50c piece, but when the coinage was changed, the test lost a lot of relevance. Also, the sole licensed "tapper and listener" is getting on in yars, so the test schedule had to be modified somewhat. To allow for his slight deafness, the official criteria for "suspect structure" is now almost identical to "fell off" specifications. Since the official tester also is somewhat disadvantaged by the vertigo he now experiences, the revised test schedule consists of The Tester hitting the nosewheel tyre with all his might using a 50c piece. His assistants strategically stationed around the plane immediately inform him if any large piece falls off. Small pieces are excluded from the inspection report as the assistants are also getting older and suffering the attendant eyesight anomalies.
A spokesperson for Rocket Airways and Garden Center said that with the new testing regime, their on-time-departure performance has reached new heights. Teething troubles assumed to be related to weather and Acts Of God have continued to plague the en-route performance which unfortunately leaves old heights.
Going forward the CEO stated that huge savings are expected as they rationalise the Company's airport facilities to a more efficient ratio of three departure gates to each two arrival gates.
In relation to the complaints of missing freight, baggage, passengers etc. the spokesperson added that this was attrbuted to a computer bug that randomly deletes entire flights from the records.
Further good news is that Fonterra are now being used as a local source of spares for the company's aircraft fleet. "This supplier is showing an uncanny ability to asses our needs for spares, sometimes before we were ourselves aware that the part would be needed. Further, they supply the parts ready painted in Company Colours. Their prices are excellent, so Rocket Airways and Garden Center are thrilled to be using such an outstanding local supplier at a time when every avenue to minimise costs must be utilised."

830880 2009-11-18 19:16:00 I have seem mechanics tapping around dents on aircraft with a coin to check for de lamination of honeycomb panels and rotor blades.
I wonder if a washer would work would the hole in the middle cause problems

830881 2009-11-19 01:07:00 On circular metallic aircraft washers, the hole is for lightening. Any lightning around dented areas is to be avoided at all costs due to personell electrocution hazards and the risk of paint damage as the mechanic explodes. We must insist that company inspectors provide their own coins to ensure their currency in inspection procedures.
For the other type of aircraft washer,The League of Aircraft Cleaners and Swabbers have stated that the tecnique of using Appearance Enhancing Operatives in percusion mode in pursuit of evidence (whether of aircraft damage or lost baggage) is not permitted at any time.
