829687 2009-11-13 03:25:00 I had no problem changing from the old rule to the current.

They didn't think it was too difficult then so why would it be too difficult to change back?

The main problem is that all the rules are not currently observed now.

Bear in mind that the right hand rule only applies at uncontrolled intersections but some people seem to think there is also a "main road" rule, so if turning right they fail to give way to a vehicle also turning right which is coming out of a side road on their right. RIGHT! :-)

829688 2009-11-13 03:40:00 Sweep, any road intersecting with a major highway or 'main' road is usually controlled by either Give Way or Stop signs. So no problem. Admittedly there was probably a lot less traffic in the '60s and '70s, but the old rule worked extremely well, and I'm sure would again once they removed all the silly jutty out half islands at left hand turns. Richard (739)
829689 2009-11-13 03:40:00 The rule was introduced soon after we arrived in NZ in 1977, so it was either towards the end of 1977, or early 1978.

It is nearly as daft, but not quite, as the "priorité à droite" rule they have, or did have in Belgium and France.

I nearly caught a packet driving into Brussels in 1970, I think it was the E21, but now renumbered E40, from Aachen, just entering the built up area when a woman in a Merc drove out at me from a small side road on the right.
Of course she had right of way, I had forgotten the French and Belgies were crazy folk.

She demonstrated how daft I was for not giving way on the main road by the Gallic finger symbol to the forehead :)

Never had that problem driving around Germany or Switzerland, my German friends hated driving in France.

The road into Brussels had notices all along saying "Pas de Slalom", and all along the side of the road in the fields below were car wrecks that had slalomed....................

829690 2009-11-13 03:43:00 What's hard about it? It is easy to see that Blue carries on turning left because Yellow is going straight ahead, so Red must wait and turn right when the way is clear.

......But...you shouldn't have to be studying your rear mirror estimating how far away the car behind is, and how fast it is going, in order to be able to decide whether to proceed turning left, or to give way......that is the stupidity combined with the ambiguity.

It should be a clear cut rule rather than having an exception, as it is in every other western country afaik. Disregard the Frogs and Belgies, they are just crazy anyway, I wouldn't have a clue what they do.

Edit: neither should one have to mind read the driver wanting to turn in front of you......"Hmm, I wonder if I can do a quick nifty turn in front of the approaching car....."...he's thinking....

829692 2009-11-13 04:26:00 forget the yellow car, in the UK blue would have right of way over red if yellow was there or not would make no difference, another stupid one is pulling over to the left to turn right gary67 (56)

829694 2009-11-13 04:42:00 No problem with the system, you have to be aware of the environment at all times, no matter what you are doing.

If you want to drive blind, you will crash and you will **** up.

It takes a few seconds to wait your turn, and I will say we have plenty of decent people who would see the traffic situation and slow down/sop and let red pass.

829695 2009-11-13 05:36:00 Funny, never hear anything from courier drivers, taxi drivers or other professional drivers on the road all day. Maybe that is because they see on an hourly basis how sensible the rule is to keep traffic flowing.
Guess it is only the slow thinking dingbats who shouldnt be on the road anyway that have the trouble.
I have had American friend visit and use my car. I explain the rule. They find no trouble with it and they are driving on the wrong side of the road to boot.
