2010-07-13 03:31:00 | Trying to troubleshoot a problematic PC. It basically turns off after about 30 seconds when booting XP. Same problem when booting a live Ubuntu CD. Tried a different psu, same prob. Disconnected the SATA HD, hooked up an IDE HD & started to install XP fresh. This also shut off partway through install. The strange thing is that it's fine (thus far) is safe mode - had it sitting here going for the last 30mins. Board is ECS GeForce6100SM-M www.hardwaresecrets.com AM64 x2 4000+ CPU Any suggestions/ideas?

2010-07-13 03:53:00 | Ok, 30 seconds was a bit generous - it dies after 5 seconds of XP starting to boot. There's only 6 entries in the event viewer before meltdown: DCOM got error "This service cannot be started in Safe Mode " attempting to start the service EventSystem with arguments "" in order to run the server: {1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF} The Event log service was stopped. | 1118415 | 2010-07-13 04:08:00 | That wont help since youre doing it in safe mode, Those probably wont work / run in safe mode. Sounds like its overheating if it shuts off within 5 secs. Altho, this doesnt explain why it boots into safe mode OK. Umm one thing when you changed the PSU, did you plug the CPU, AND ATX 12v adapters back into the mobo? Have you scanned for malware, (since it wont boot normally, but boots into safe mode)?

2010-07-13 04:17:00 | Yep, plugged it all back in . Will do a scan, although it shuts down during the Ubuntu live CD boot and XP install to a different HD so I don't think its infected . RAM tests ok .

2010-07-13 04:51:00 | Try what it says here (www.techspot.com). It looks like its the same mobo I went into the bios and changed the pmu to auto as it is defaulted to disabled and it seems to be working so far

2010-07-13 06:10:00 | Checked CPU temp? It doesn't really sound like a typical temp issue but it's worth checking. | wratterus (105) | |
2010-07-13 06:22:00 | PC . turns off after about 30 seconds The strange thing is that it's fine (thus far) is safe mode - had it sitting here going for the last 30mins . Board is ECS Overheating indicated but overheating happens regardless of operating systems or safe modes . Has it got a graphics card in it? That might be overheating . Failing that I'd be suspicious of the board itself, seeing as it's an ECS .

2010-07-13 06:46:00 | Temp is only around 40 for CPU and 23 for system. No graphics card. Changing the pmu setting didn't help - damn, thought that might do it! It may be less hassle to replace the board. It's under extended warranty so I can do a quote for a replacement. By the sounds of it, this PC has had a checkered past in the reliability stakes.

2010-07-14 01:26:00 | Real far out thought - the power button isn't getting jammed at all? I've had a few of these recently. Maybe unplug the front panel connector from the board and short out the pins with a screwdriver to power the PC on, then see if it still shuts down. I expect it's the board though, ECS are pretty awful. :(
