832532 2009-11-22 19:06:00 I have a few queries

We all know that Cadbury tried to dick with the formula and they were forced to retract slightly. But

Why is their 250 bars quite a bit cheaper than say Whittakers on the shelves (at normal non special prices)

Here are some facts.
Last year Cadburys HO in the UK decided they had too many factories worldwide and that they would close some down.

They decided that in NZ they would stop producing bars and bring them in from Australia, but that they would make all their chococlate boxes in Dunedin and ship them to Australia.

Cocoa butter and Cocoa powder (the main ingredients of Chocolate - saw Petra Baguist's tv show) are expensive, Palm oil can replace one of them and is cheaper.

So how come with the much higher wages that Aussies get, the shipping cost, our supposed lower cost milk, and the lower wages our supermarkets pay that an imported chocolate can be much cheaper than a local one ?

That will be another drain on our overseas funds, more imports and less local taxes paid. Add to that Minties etc now being made in Thailand ? (would you trust their water ?)

Whittakers chocolate has gone up in price due to cadburys being less popular at the moment (according to our chocolate purchaser for the office:)), but i just call that good business practice, make hay while the sun shines???

832534 2009-11-23 09:19:00 You'll find that the "250g" blocks of Cadbury's are in fact 200g. jwil1 (65)

Yes but they are a lot cheaper. You can get 2 bars for $4-5, while the others are about $4 for 1. I don't buy any as not a choc fan, so doesn't affect me.

I would suggest you just buy what you can afford. It is called a budget.

Just because other countries produce whatever at a lower price and then you do the comparison and this does not add up in your opinion it may mean nothing.

Sweep - Its not what I can afford that matters. Even if I had a million dollars I would still be annoyed that a company can import something from a higher waged economy and sell it cheaper than a local company can.

I am passionate about New Zealand doing well, and importing container loads of chocolate and you going skining all the time is not going to help.

In the end if a country does export more than it imports it goes down the gurglar.

832538 2009-11-23 21:35:00 Cadbury's Dairy Milk chocolate has much less of the expensive cocoa in it than Whittaker's Creamy Milk chocolate, 21% versis 33%. The old Cadbury's Dairy Milk had 27% cocoa which is about the minimum a quality chocolate can have.

Whittakers has left the Dairy Milk at 33% which they use in their television advertisements but some of their other chocolates have much less cocoa, 23% to 25% and I think they cut the quantity of milk too.

I posted this earlier

This is the ingredients listed on the Whittakers website for the Almond Gold Block:
Cocoa: 33%
Milk powder: 30%
Almonds: 25%
= 88%.

Their Almond Gold Slab still has this ingredients except for having 1% more almonds.

And this is the ingredients listed on the back of an Almond Gold Block:
Cocoa: 25%
Milk powder: 22%
Almonds: 25%
= 72%.
I don't know what makes up the other quarter but I assume most of it is soya.

There are similar stories with other Whittakers Blocks.

Well, if it has a euro sticker on it, a Lucas badge, or says Made in Mumbai, I will not be touching the wallet.

832541 2009-11-24 10:28:00 Digby, my guess is that Cadbury's are trying to regain markets lost due to the bad publicity over recent months by selling at a lower price, whether that will last remains to be seen. Even though they have now attempted to rectify things, so many people have (a) lost faith in them or (b) tried Whittakers, or another brand and decided they liked that better.

Incidentally, we saw Whittakers chocolate for sale in the supermarkets in Queensland, if it wasn't selling, I doubt they would be stocking it. We also heard adverse comments regarding Cadbury's chocolate and cocoa powder over there.

I am not a huge fan of chocolate, but my husband has always loved Whittakers.
