832046 2009-11-21 03:35:00 Seeing as Southlands weather is so erratic. 28 degrees and sunny yesterday and 14 and wet today, I've given up on trying to grow tomatoes in the garden.

Everyone else here has 4" high tomatoes in their glasshouses that are now flowering.
Glasshouses are a waste of time too unless it is warm enough outside.

So I bought a grow light kit and husband is just now preparing our smallest spare room.
It's diagonally opposite to the lounge so will be toasty and warm in winter with the fire going - in fact I have the fire going now actually.........

Yay!!! ALL year round tomatoes.

And no smart comments about indoor gardening - I've already had every man and his sheep here say that to me.................

832047 2009-11-21 03:37:00 Hopefully you don't have nosy neighbours accusing you of growing other plants indoors... somebody (208)
832048 2009-11-21 03:39:00 Ahh! But at least with indoor gardening there's a significantly reduced risk of weeds, or slugs, or birds getting at the fruit...

And the weather is far more controllable.

I know. My parents live there. I wouldn't like your mid-summer though.
And I've had the entire town go on about other crops, thanks.
They'll just be veges only.
I like my house - not keen on swapping it for a small steel room.

832052 2009-11-21 04:58:00 Hopefully it doesn't chew up too much power for you.

In the UK at least, people growing 'other' crops bypass the power meter because they use that much power.

832053 2009-11-21 19:29:00 Nah, I worked it out - $28 a month. I can live with that.
It's just one light and 4 plants.
