831773 2010-01-11 01:56:00 "I tell the kids I've been to court on 35 charges and I'm now in Parliament. Any one of those kids could be prime minister."

When I studied the NZ parliamentary system at intermediate school (OK, we're talking nearly 40 years ago), I recall that any conviction (other than minor traffic-related - or similar - convictions) precluded someone from being elected to Parliament. (And something about convicted criminals not having the right to vote???)

It seems this requirement has been relaxed a tad. Obviously not a change for the better.

But perhaps the bar had to be lowered because there were fewer and fewer honest men (and/or women) who were willing to compromise their morals and become a politician.

Perhaps we need to raise the bar again...

831774 2010-01-11 02:18:00 I have no problem looking in the mirror.

When the mirror is full of 'scratches', I get a bit pissed...

How many didn't even make it to court because he wasn't caught red-handed?

The fact he has "charges" is indicative of his behaviour.

But didn't his trouble making start before he was of an age to come under the jurisdiction of the justice system? I understand from a Board of Trustees source that Harawira was "voluntarily" removed from the church boarding school he attended, by his mother. Before the school did it themselves.

The guy is an embarrassment to all New Zealanders, Maori and non-Maori.
