Mainly not for blocking stuff from coming in, but more actually to stop things getting out...

You don't need anti-virus either
. If thats the case can you please kindly explain then why 90% of the repairs most techs like myself do relate to malware/Virus infections ??

At the moment I have 3 customers PC's on the benches, with another two to collect tomorrow -Two of the PC's I'm currently working on belong to older people who dont download pirated stuff, hack sites etc, just general day to day web surfing. Both had upto date Norton.

831166 2009-11-20 15:58:00 There's too many folks sitting on the fence, so to speak. I shouldn't have included the "Equal Importance" poll option.

But the votes are interesting.

But the votes are interesting. As mentioned before - Why not just put on free versions of both - wont cost anything and at least it will be covered. NO excuse really.

I'd suspect they don't know enough to not open email attachments or to do similar unsafe things, but clearly they are doing something they shouldn't be . Perhaps their "day to day" web surfing takes them to some sites they are unlikely to confess to and they likely don't have the browser locked down .

Certainly people have run computers safely for years without anti-virus so you don't need to have it, but as I said I have always run it myself .

The only "repair" for an infection is a clean install of the operating system .

I hope anyone reading what your posting recognizes it for the utter rubbish it is.

Are you trolling?

If the stuff is malware and has got in you're hosed and preventing it getting out is pretty much a futile exercise. Of course we didn't define what stuff was, there may be reasons to block that don't relate to Malware.

So what alternative do you suggest?. The advice given on the Security Now podcast is just that, and I think they know more about it than you.

I've written that I use anti-virus and a firewall, what it your problem??

I certainly recommend that people use them, but if you know what you're doing you can survive without them .

You would know a stupid discussion when you see one, you start most of them .
